Really really tall:

Burj Dubai skyscraper soars into record books

The Burj Dubai is set to become the tallest building in the world, with some unofficial reports claiming the building overtook the Taipei 101 on Wednesday, and others that an official announcement will be made on Saturday.

Property developers Emaar are being tight lipped on the rumours and would not confirm the stories yesterday, but if confirmed, Dubai's latest icon must now be taller than 509 metres (1,671 feet), the height of Taiwan's Taipei 101.

Burj Dubai will eventually hold the record in all four categories as recognised by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, have the highest publicly accessible observation deck, and the world's fastest lift, which will shoot along at 65km/hour (40mph).

I immediately propose building a taller one in Ramsey, mainly to

a: show them crazy arabs how it's really done

b: solve the problem of revitalising Ramsey - mainly by using it as part of the concrete foundation for it...

c: create enough new and affordable housing for everyone

d: solve the Island's traffic problems by installing a cable car style "Gondola lift" from the top of the tower to the centre of Douglas (I think that point might just clinch it with the commissioners..)

Was down there last weekend. You can't get too close to it, as it is surrounded by the world's biggest building site. It looks like 1945 Warsaw at the moment, but if the rest of Dubai is anything to go by, it will be incredible when it's finished.

The fizz was Coca-Cola - in Muslim Dubai, champagne is available only in the hotels - but this weekend a Briton, a New Zealander and an American celebrated at the top of the world’s new tallest building.

The drinks were to celebrate after workers had poured out concrete to complete the 141st floor of the Burj Dubai tower. At 1,680ft, the building has now overtaken the 1,670ft Taipei 101 in Taiwan, until now the world’s tallest skyscraper.

The tower’s construction by an army of 6,000 sun-baked Asian labourers is far from over. By the time it is completed next year, the Burj Dubai - centrepiece of the Gulf state’s extravagant attempts to build itself on to the world map - will overtake the 1,815ft CN communications tower in Toronto and the 2,063ft KVLY-TV mast in Fargo, North Dakota, to become the tallest free-standing man-made structure ever built.

but....

Emaar’s arch-rival, Nakheel, developer of the reclaimed palm islands, is already planning to build a 3,000ft skyscraper on a reclaimed island in the Gulf, and Donald Trump, the American tycoon, is planning another soaring tower.

I had the opportunity to look round the Burj Dubai apartment sales complex last year - not that I could buy one because they all sold out in about the first 30 minutes of going on sale, but the numbers are stunning.

The foundations are 200 piles bored to a depth of 50 metres and tied together with a 4 metre thick concrete raft. The building will be visible from 60 miles away. The building's water system will supply 950,000 litres per day. The water from the condensation that forms on the outside of the building will be collected and used for the landscaping. There will be 700 private apartments (each with floor to ceiling windows) and an Armani hotel as well as shops and offices. There is an outdoor swimming pool on the 78th floor.

And the Burj Dubai is just the centrepiece of the 22 million square foot "downtown" project which includes the worlds largest shopping mall, and a town with apartment blocks connected by monorail and canal.

The whole Dubai project amazes me. Will there be enough visitors to fill the 100,000 hotel rooms planned by 2012? Are there enough residents and businesses to fill the hundreds (yes hundreds) of tower blocks under construction?
