Anybody got any Ideas to improve the Tourist Industry on the Isle of Man ??

Mine would be ---------- Purchase and sink large boats on the west coast , this would help stop coastal erosion, offer shelter for marine life

and create ideal dive sites for the diving fraternity ?

Oh yea almost forgot, they would also create surf?

Dry ski slope on Snaefell?

Working Viking village ?

Public executions of all M.H.K's who fail to deliver on election promises ?(only joking! a public whipping would be adequate)

All suggestions welcome no matter how extreme ! the winner will recieve an invitation from Mr le Paige to relocate to Douglas??

Sack everybody in the Governments Tourism Department and get Pierre-Yves Gerbeau in on a contract.

Replace the Racket Ha Ha If only........

Go for the offshore yacht race market - Swan class etc

Run a Def Con

Arms Fair

Go for the pink pound holidays - yes it's not considered good form to burn them these days ( been suggested quite recently but seems to have died a death )

We need to accept that the days of mass tourism can never return. The best we can hope for is to attract people with 'niche' events - and then there has to be a balance between the cost and the return.

A simple suggestion - The Parish Walk is succesful, so why not introduce the 'Parish Run' as well? As long as the prize money is sufficient, it could attract some of the top long-distance runners - especially if it's held, for example, a couple of weeks after the London Marathon.

Build a proper motorsport venue, for visitors and locals alike and attract everything from track days, car and bike launches, British and World Superbikes, MotoGp, BTCC, all forms of racing in fact. It would help to grow the infrastructure needed to support it and provide jobs and entertainment to local people as well as attract visitors. The transport infrastructure would be more viable and profitable leading to a better deal all round for everyone!

It would put the Island in the front rooms of every country in the world and promote us as a high tech and go ahead community. A good place to visit and do business. (I'm sure all these emerging countries who have jumped on the race circuit bandwagon recently know a thing or two. There are only three circuits in the British Isles capable of holding international events and they are not the best as far as facilities go!

It could compliment the TT and MGP etc and maybe events could be run in conjunction, reducing road closing times and pressure on the organisers.

We seem to have blown a lot more money on crazier schemes than this lately. (Approx cost, 60m) And something that generates an income both directly and indirectly would be a great investment of our money

And no, not Jurby!

Cheap air travel and ferry crossings and the people will come - maybe not for long holidays but certainly for weekend and short breaks.

Totally agree , but don't you think that's just a little bit too sensible??

So why would people come here and not go to http://www.silverstone.co.uk without having to be put up in a hotel, get a ferry/plane then maybe hire a car, and on and on - If not jurby then where? What crazier schemes have we blown more than £60million on? How do you approximate this cost? Not every one on the Island likes motorsport. What if it's built and fails? Silverstone had a 3 day crowd of 207,000 people in 2007, great - where are you going to put them?

Quite like the suggestions by Blue Monday and Lonan 3 calling for a "Parish Run" built on the success of the Parish Walk and bid to attract the "Pink Pound" by making the place gay friendly

Why not combine the two by having a "Parish Bum" ?

Same course, but instead of touching the door of each parish church competitors have to commit buggery in each churchyard

We could try for Olympic status !

It has to be niche markets. The Parish Walk (can't see a run somehow), for example, could be sexed right up and grown into a very large international event. Perhaps team up with a large charity for promotion, say the British Heart Foundation, and make it a high profile event which will attract distance walkers worldwide. At the same time though, there could be mini walking challenges for different sectors of the whole walk; e.g. a particularly hilly sector could be the 'Uphill Walking Challenge', or an easy sector could be the 'Family Challenge' etc. etc.

We have the raw material for a great many niche attractions; walking, bird watching, archaeology, coastal pursuits (I am told that we have on of the best seas for windsurfing) they just need packaging.
