Lonan3
STORY Tynwald is to be asked to approve a £1.25m revamp of Governor's Bridge and Bemahague Road, Onchan, If approved, the scheme will involve a new road being built through land next to Government House. The old section of road could be retained as part of the traditional TT circuit. If it gets the go-ahead, the first phase of the Governor's Bridge improvement scheme would start on November 5 and be completed before the 2008 TT. In mid-November, Bemahague Road will be closed from Governor's Hill to Governor's Bridge with a traffic management scheme in place. Then in mid-March until mid-April, all three approach roads to Governor's Bridge will close to traffic to allow the new roundabout to be built. Mr. Sausages
Does that mean all the big trees in the Governor's fields would go?
Tugger
Sounds to me like the total number of roundabouts will stay the same, no? Used to piss me off, driving from Onchan, and having to wait for bloody ages while traffic from Governor's Hill took priority...
Tempus Fugit
I thought the plan was to put a new carriageway in behind the hedge and trees for the southbound traffic, and the northbound would use the present road, or is that too simple ? surely they can't pinch too much of H.E.'s garden
Silentbob
Actually, speaking of HE, what does he actually do apart from open a few things, cut a few ribbons, and lives in a lavish mansion paid for by us? Does anyone know his actual job description?

Does anyone know his actual job description? That is his job description. On the road thing haven't the DoT tried this before and didn't the environmentals go apeshit at the time over the trees that needed to be chopped down, eventually getting the project scrapped? Pfft, I wonder how many trees were chopped down to build/make room for the houses they live in. Bloody environmentalists. I think it's a good idea though, I'd hate having to get in to Douglas from Onchan. Probably takes just as long to get over the mountain from Ramsey. Does anyone know his actual job description? [/quote Its not very lavish compared to some of the chav palaces springing up here lately, but I take your point. The post of Governor is an Imperial relic and has no place in our modern, global, tax friendly nation I can't wait until Government House & grounds have become a new DOT super roundabout surrounded by Guvnor's Glade Luxury Apartments By the way, he's a very nice chap. often spot him & the missus taking morning coffee in Java Lounge
Skig
Hannay's grandious idea has been kicked out by Tynwald. They have not agreed to the funding. A bloody nose for the highway departments chief idiot. Perhaps they will now come forward with a simpler idea for a single width road in the Governors grounds leaving the existing road in use ( a dual carriageway without cutting down many trees) The old road would still be usable for the TT & MGP. Yep, heard the minister on the radio saying how they would have to go back and review the scheme so that they can put a revised plan forward in the near future. What happened to the scheme they were going to undertake on Johnny Wattersons lane so that the traffic went that way onto the 'ring road' they are trying to create? Or was that to make the adjacent housing development easier to get through and nothing is going to be done?
teapot
Don't think it was the roundabout at the entrance of HE's residence (phase 1), it was the fly-over from the field at the top of Blackberry Lane, across Summerhill Glen to Victoria Road (then another roundabout) (phase 2) that got them all hot under the collar. The Minister thought it was a good idea by the way!!
Mr. Sausages
I heard that too - they wanted to build a new bridge over Summerhill Glen. Surely our money can be better spent.

Perhaps they're trying to sneak the Monorail through planning after all.
