The Isle of Man has long had a reputation as a seedy offshore tax haven.

Throughout all these lengthy drawn out sleaze allegations and our CM's adamant refusal to stand down and so forth, the above comment has been my main concern.

We have worked extremely hard to shake off that reputation to become a first class jurisdiction with which to do business - and now what happens? We are set to be rebranded alright - but not as we would like.

I don't doubt the basis of the story and it will do us no good at all. It was only a matter of time before this and Ned made the UK press

A spokesman for Mr Corkill said yesterday it would be "destabilising" if he had to resign "every time someone made unsubstantiated allegations".

Yeah, right

The label "tax haven" is, implicitly, pejorative.

Perhaps this is what was meant by re branding; finding another word for "tax haven" (off - shore - low cost - centre - of - excellence, perhaps) It won't work. People will still say "tax haven" and it will always be a pejorative.

A "tax haven" is unlikely to attract good publicity from it's neighbours. So it makes little difference whether the Guardian article contained a few errors.

Dodgy politics and weird legal cases are grist for the mill to anyone reporting on seedy business centres.
