A Manx Registered ship, the famous MV Tribulas owned by Shell, caused quite a nasty environmental incident in Bantry Bay in the 1990s. There were questions asked in the Irish Parliament and Westminster too. The UK Government footed the bill for sending a Nimrod and Wessex helicopters to save the crew. The Isle of Man Shipping Register is "the best kept secret in the Industry" according to its director on 3fm news today. 20071207_3fm_Ship_Register.mp3 He said the register gives a spin off to the local economy to the likes of lawyers, financiers, tax advisers.
