But the baby polar bear has fans all over the world. Many of them travelled to Berlin this week to help him celebrate his first birthday. Yet evidence suggests that polar bears are not facing extinction, even if the ice caps are melting. Alaska. home to a fifth of the world's 25,000 polar bears, currently has its largest bear population in 40 years. Meanwhile, Knut faces an uncertain and lonely future. The German media like to think Flocke holds the key to his salvation and that she will eventually become his mate. But for most zoologists the idea is pure fantasy. Update The warm feeling surrounding Germany's celebrity polar bear Knut is turning icy ahead of his second birthday on Friday - because Berlin may lose him. Knut's father came from Neumuenster Zoo, which is still entitled to Knut under a contract with Berlin Zoo. Fans of Knut, who has proven a big money-spinner for Berlin Zoo, are urging the zoo director to keep him in the capital, German media report.
