molly
I was talking to a customer of mine this morning who is friends with the family. The eldest son deserves some sort of an award for extricating everyone from the debris of the fallen building. Apparantly the father has had to have his spleen removed and is in intensive but on the mend. The strange thing is, how does a house collapse to such an extent without having a gas main into it? LPG bulk cylinder or bottles maybe?
Frances
it leaks from an adjacent main ? - not unknown especially in early days of natural gas - what is Port Erin on ? natural gas or propane as in Peel?
molly
Only Onchan/Douglas and Glenvine is on Nat gas all the rest of the island is on LPG or LPG/air mix, LPG being more heavy than air it tends to fill basements and such like.

Minxie
From Isle of Man Newspapers site : THE Port Erin house devastated by yesterday's blaze will probably have to be demolished. Four people had a miraculous escape from the blaze on Tuesday morning. A fire service spokesman said: 'The property which was on fire has structural damage to such an extent that it prevents personnel entering to carry out any form of formal investigation. 'The property is likely to be demolished before work can be assessed on the next door property which also has severe structural damage to one side of the property. 'Other government departments are looking into bringing specialist investigators to the scene to assist with the investigation. 'Manx Gas is in the process of carrying out an investigation.' zephyr
The Fu%*ing cowards, A few years ago they would have entered the (Half) demolished building. Oh well so goes Health And safety. I am getting sick and tired of H and S Please bring back common sense.
Cret
The Fu%*ing cowards, More than a bit harsh unless you've been down there to look at it yourself and see whether you would go in there. Even then, that doesn't make it sensible. But I agree that there's far too much H&S nonsense in general these days.
Mission
I think he means the examination of the building after the blaze was put out (to determine the cause). I'd hardly call the brigade cowards though, it's not a job I think I could do. I have the utmost respect for firefighters.

Please share with us YOUR experiences in dealing with dangerous situations such as this. Your solution for entering a house that was falling down will be well received by the Brigade I am sure. To make that kind of comment about our local heroes you must have several awards for bravery or be an ex member of the SAS. Perhaps you are an expert in structural engineering? jimbohoran
We all got out ok and everyone did everything they could to help out so no point argueing over it now. Admittedly some people involved since (not mentioning any names etc.) seem to be trying to convince us it was an act of god...hmm...I forgot that god builds gas pipes... And it seems to be taking a very long time for the investigation to close, when all but one possible causes has been ruled out.... Me thinks someone knows what caused it and is a little worried. What an absolutely spinless, idiotic and disgusting thing to say about those who potentially risk their lives on a daily basis for the safety of others. You really need to take a good long hard look at what you wrote there, and what it actually means. It's offensive and thoughtless. Really glad that everyone got out ok, by the way. I'm sure it could have been so much worse.

Well, if it is deemed to be an act of God, perhaps you have a good case against him. He can't go around blowing up peoples houses when they are in bed!! The Pope would have to appear in court on the Island as his representitive here on earth and it may finally answer the question as to whether he exists or not! Oh I do hate riddles - are you suggesting that the loss adjusters suspect foul play of some sort and as a result are loath to pay out?
jimbohoran
Oh I do hate riddles - are you suggesting that the loss adjusters suspect foul play of some sort and as a result are loath to pay out? Its not the insurance they're helping us. Certain other companies and establishments are trying to save their skin by trying to convince us it was an act of god so that we wouldn't look for compensation. If you look into a certain company and see which establishment owns 60 percent of it you'll start to understand who we're up against. Some one who works for the establishment and is supposed to be neutral, grilled me and my family over the incident the day after it happened, trying to convince us that it was our fault. Because of who owns most of the company, it would look bad if it goes to court. Can't use company names etc. for legal reasons...sorry.
