Smoke Detectors In Public Housing

If its a typical two storey house a mains/battery back up interlinked smoke detector should be fitted at the bottom and top of the stairs near the bedrooms. No need to have a heat detector in the kitchen, the fire regs assume your up and about if something catches fire in the kitchen.

Another salutary lesson is to make sure you have insurance. This poor lady has absolutely nothing and is now begging for hand-outs to furnish her new home. Contents alone insurance would not be too expensive, particularly if it is paid in instalments. The question also has to be asked who installed the faulty extractor fan and can she obtain any compensation from them?

A very lucky lady, bearing in mind she was only woken by the dog and her daughter was at school at the time.

Problem is that the downstairs smoke is then redundant, hence the heat, thats why its compulsory on all new builds.

The downstairs smoke acts as the sensor for that area, the purpose of the alarms are for when the occupants are asleep, not for when you burn something in the kitchen as obviously your up and about. No requirement for a heat detector in the kitchen.

The purpose of the alarms are to awake the occupants.

As i have said, heat detectors are compulsory in new builds, the building regs are based on BS5839-6, downstairs smoke detectors are not, they would be considered to be diminished by attenuation to be effective in waking sleepers, the highest point, ie top of stairs, adjacent to bedrooms,is the accepted position. You will not get habitation certification without kitchen heats.

Should there be a bedroom on the ground floor then a ground floor linked sounder would be required.
