quilp
Anyone remember the irascible and flamboyant Arnie Knowles, Turf Accountant (ahem)? He opened the little betting-shop on the corner of the back lane, which may've been part of the Dog's at one time? Funny bloke, sold him a whistle or two...

quilp
The Globe used to be called the 'Pig and Whistle'. Popular with a regiment of Scottish Highlanders stationed here, the regiment was known as the Pig and Whistle. Reference to the pipes, maybe. Edited August 17, 2017 by quilp Old thumbs... Andy Onchan
On 2/16/2008 at 10:37 PM, mollag said: The Star was a hard Man U pub at one time, they banned Sunday papers if Man U had lost, We noted that Man U when in the 2nd division had a leading goalscorer who was their own goalkeeper [A Stepney] so we thought it right and proper that we should point this out to the Star regulars! As the man said,"they dont like it up em" Yes there are scars, but it was worth it! Interesting point, the pub was an annexe to the Star Hotel on Prospect Hill and they were linked internally. I was right... the Star was on Prospect Hill, at least the hotel was. I recall going in there (more out of curiosity really) not long before it was demolished and it was like stepping back in time to the early Victorian era. Complete with Aspidistras planted in what appeared to be guzunders!
Shake me up Judy
Good bit of digging that Andy. I don't remember the hotel on Prospect Hill but I'm sure someone will have an old picture of it. Very interesting thread this.
gettafa
It's a perennial thread topic, but ever changing. Far better than white dog poo or potholes. This was a good informative post from a similar thread: Edited August 18, 2017 by gettafa

mollag
Me leaving the Star site, the two tier nature is exposed, there was a dray chute from Prospect Hill all the way to the Nelson st pub. The hotel was long gone in my time.
mollag
I think this is the original frontage after conversion to two units.

Shake me up Judy
Great photos Mollag. Good stuff this. I was thinking it was quite a size by the first pic of the demolition. It was before my time I'm afraid but I'm fascinated by old Douglas.
