They can't, no, but mkv is just a container, so you can usually just take out the mpeg4 stream and put it in an avi container and it works, just takes a few mins. If there's any reason you can't do that, like you need to resample the sound, or the profile isn't compatable, you have to transcode. It'll still be high def, but it'll take a good few hours, depending on your pc speed. Often it's better to transcode to wmv, as that can handle 5.1.
