Albert Tatlock
Can we please use some of the money to send David Christian on a 5 year town-twinning study to McMurdo Sound in Antarctica? This will be a cost-effective exercise - as with what we will save - the £8m will soon be £20m and the rates will be down by 50% by the time he gets back. Plus I think the place would look far prettier without him anyway.

manxy
I was just reading through the site mentioned earlier http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/isle_of_man/7290192.stm and it stated "One of the first projects to benefit could be a scheme re-lay the walkway through the centre of the capital" Is it really necessary to redo the walkway? I can understand the importance in having a covered area along the main shopping area and careful planning would be needed to attach the buildings to the covered walkway, like those seen across http://www.cravencourt.co.uk/list.asp (but with wider walkways) I do like the old traditional look on the outside The cost however, would (no doubt) be extremely high and one wonders if Douglas has had more than its fair share of the Islands bounty? Maybe it could be used in other areas like..er... Ramsey? You know, the place where they have the tourist attractions like Mooragh Park, Harbour and the Albert Tower (when not raining) and I suppose people can always look at the Queens pier from a distance. Is there anymore Tourist attractions in Ramsey? If so, any inside for when there's bad weather? edit:spelling
slinkydevil
Sounds like he has already spent it all, in Druglas. I've noticed a few instances now you use 'Druglas'. Are you trying to be clever (failing) or are you blinkered to Ramseys drug scene?
manxy
One area which desperately need addressing IMO, is some type of water barriers. If the water levels are causing problems for buildings and roads now, then what would be the outcome if they rise 1 metre? http://www.foe.co.uk/pubsinfo/briefings/ht...1215150205.html So the bigger issue I believe, is that instead of redoing the walkway through the shopping area and making it more attractive (as much as I would like), money needs to be 'poured' into areas of sea water level defence, because if the link above is correct, all the new work along the prom and harbour would be wasted. This would also apply to other towns around the island. Edited:addition
feelslikeitshould
What are they going to relay it with? I bet they just dig it up and put down exacty the same type of paviors as are there already. It's not even like it's in a terrible state of disrepair, it's just spending money for the sake of spending money. I bet the Douglas ratepayers would have something more to say about it if the corpy was paying instead of treasury....
