There is no "craving" to be in the know. It's wanting to hear raw information from real people without it getting distorted and sensationalised by the media (which then becomes your "facts" that you want to wait for.) You mean you heard rumours which on this occasion turned out to be true? No, I spoke to someone who has a friend that is a police officer. She told me certain facts that I am aware of. So far, everything reported through the media has confirmed what she told me. I am not however 'spreading' any rumours here, because as we all know, nothing is to be said until "confirmed" officially. I still do not see what the problem is. I have not told you anything about the incident yet - that you are not already aware of. I am also not trying to score points. That accusation is ridiculous. You would naturally fuel rumours and speculations when a road is closed and all that one is told initially is that there has been a 'serious incident' (would they close a road and use resources on this scale otherwise?). I'm not knocking them, but perhaps there are lessons to be learned about timely and accurate release of information when there is such an incident. I'd think responsibility also lies partially with local media such as MR, who seem to have a laissez faire attitude - i.e. wait to be told by police rather than pressing for answers to questions that people have a right to know about. If media were less slack and more dogged then the police would have to up their game in terms of releasing info to the public. A lot of people are making unwarranted assumptions - e.g. that the man who died was an innocent victim (who knows, he might have gone beserk and attacked others with a knife and ended up being wounded himself, or been a drug dealer, or been attacked by someone who went beserk or... or... or... - and ultimately it will be up to the authorities to get to the bottom of it, ultimately with a coroner's inquest or trial). Point is that with good timely information being provided to media, and a responsible and sensible media a lot of these rumours and assumptions wouldn't arise in the first place. I really think we should not be so flippant/jokey about this incident on a public forum where friends or relatives could read it. Best wishes for his family at this time.
