%age Posted March 29, 2008 Share Posted March 29, 2008 Although Douglas have not released the list of candidates for the local elections until the deadline for objections has passed at 2pm on Monday, does anyone know who will be the next Mayor of Douglas? Perhaps because the appointment is made by rotation we will need to wait until Monday to find out which of the candidates will be returned. It's not going to change the way things are done in Douglas. Yes, it would be diiferent if we could have a directly elected mayor like Ken in London. Better to combine all of Rushen into one authority with one representative from Colby, Ballabeg, and Rushen Parish, two from PSM and three from PE. Talk about jobs for the boys...3 MHKs and 9 Commissioners for 3000 residents is laughable really. Well considering Braddans previous clerk was on over £80k a year overseeing about 3,500 residents, I'd rather see someone swanning around on that sort of deal looking after 80,000. The Council had already made a decision in voting Dot Pitts, wife of Councillor Stephen Pitts to be the next mayor. The decision was not unanimous or indeed popular. That is perhaps academic now, as Mrs Pitts lost her seat to Liberal Vannin Candidate Sara Blackman. What sort of person needs to be Mayor of our capital city? Maybe the Council will stick with their decision and have a non-council member to be mayor as they did when R.A. Oates lost his seat in 1997 but returned to take the boss's chair for the year. For some time now, it would appear that Douglas Corporation has been run by a tight knit group, lead by the self styled Leader of the Coucil, David Christian. I wonder will the gang of four new kids on the block from the Liberal Vannin Party be able to make any effective changes, if indeed change is needed.
