Mayor Of Douglas

Although Douglas have not released the list of candidates for the local elections until the deadline for objections has passed at 2pm on Monday, does anyone know who will be the next Mayor of Douglas? Perhaps because the appointment is made by rotation we will need to wait until Monday to find out which of the candidates will be returned.

Does anyone really give a flying fuck? It's not going to change the way things are done in Douglas.

Yes, it would be diiferent if we could have a directly elected mayor like Ken in London.

We might get somebody with some ideas rather than the usual 'Your turn this year, Fred.'

Someone elected with say 15,000 votes not 13 chums!

Could the island cope with such an idea!

So, how does we change the way things is done in Douglas, or for that matter Port Erin.....

**note to southsiders, especially gobby ones calling themselves "Port Erin".

There are 9 seats and only 8 candidates standing so far in Port Erin, oh village of your name (click it do)

It is not as if Port Erin even needs a council. We have three MHKs and nine commissioners for three thousand residents.

Better to combine all of Rushen into one authority with one representative from Colby, Ballabeg, and Rushen Parish, two from PSM and three from PE.

True enough and well said.

Talk about jobs for the boys...3 MHKs and 9 Commissioners for 3000 residents is laughable really.

I'm all for just one authority and all Island rates for a population of 80000 people - it would make sense, but we'll never see it happen.

That's all very well, but then you wouldn't have a highly paid and pensioned clerk strutting about and wallowing in his own self-importance. Doing 'things'.

Well considering Braddans previous clerk was on over £80k a year overseeing about 3,500 residents, I'd rather see someone swanning around on that sort of deal looking after 80,000. At least its better value for money.

There has to be an argument for all island rates. These tinpot authorites are just an unnecessary layer of expenditure we can do without.

Mayor Of Douglas, Who will be next?

Is now a pertinent question.

The Council had already made a decision in voting Dot Pitts, wife of Councillor Stephen Pitts to be the next mayor. The decision was not unanimous or indeed popular. That is perhaps academic now, as Mrs Pitts lost her seat to Liberal Vannin Candidate Sara Blackman.

What sort of person needs to be Mayor of our capital city? Maybe the Council will stick with their decision and have a non-council member to be mayor as they did when R.A. Oates lost his seat in 1997 but returned to take the boss's chair for the year.

For some time now, it would appear that Douglas Corporation has been run by a tight knit group, lead by the self styled Leader of the Coucil, David Christian.

I wonder will the gang of four new kids on the block from the Liberal Vannin Party be able to make any effective changes, if indeed change is needed.
