Don't see the point of the cobbles around the roundabout myself

They are neither road nor roundabout

Reminds me of that bit between the arse and the fanny, known to some as the "taint"

'Cos it 'taint arse and it 'taint fanny

Is there any need of these cobbles?

However, I would like to add that whoever did the cobbles and also the angles of the roads, did a really good job (p.s, it wasn't me, but know a good job when I see it)

Do you work for this employer by any chance?

I drive straight over the red circle - only a compulsive buffoon would go round it.
Say no more :whatever:

I shan't be silenced, lol - I also don't have a tin of boiled sweets in my glovebox, or tissues and a rug on the parcel shelf. And I don't wear gloves that resemble a chequered flag whilst driving.

Or is it 'cos the sort of girl who is willing to escort you home has questionable standards of personal hygiene?

So now they are going to cone off and then permanently block off the red bit

Really. What is the fucking point off this. All this move can possibly do is make it more difficult for vehicles to move through the junction.

What a waste of money

Completely agree... roundabouts are supposed to improve traffic flow, so now cars will have to go slower and deviate further rather than pretty much go straight on (coming from Douglas towards Onchan) causing more congestion...

fucking numpties. Does anyone with any common sense work there? (well probably, the guys on the ground do, just that the "decision" makers have obviously been employed for their total lack of common sense and fore thought)

At least the article confirms that the cobbled area on other roundabouts like the ones by Lord St police station aren't meant to be driven on by cars

Well yes... and it also confirms that certain members of our law-abiding police force did not know that either..

I've also seen a police car drive straight over it in front of me.

The whole thing is a joke! Only goes to show... that the 'planners' behind this really do not know what they are doing. To start off, I did drive around the red circle (from Douglas to Onchan)... but that was until I tried the same manouver with a car on my left turning up towards governors hill. On quickly realising that it was impossible to do - without actually hitting each other - I swerved away and back over the red circle.

Frankly, it is dangerous to drive around the red circle. There is no room for 'two lanes of traffic'. If one were to collide with another car (while both attempting to use the roundabout from Douglas to Onchan) who would be responsible? I very much doubt that DOT would admit that they caused the accident by encouraging people to drive that way!

*looks forward to more ridiculous road closures*

Quoted for truth.

Ultimately, who gives a shit? Does it really make a shit of difference whether people drive across, around or underneath the fucking red bits? It doesn't endanger road safety in any way so why don't they just leave people to it.

Only on the fucking Isle of Man can we have a situation where it almost becomes a parliamentary debate about people using a bloody roundabout.

Aaaarrrrgghhh!

Aaaaaaaand, relax.

Though actually, looking at the pics supplied by iomtoday, it looks like there was almost a collision between two vehicles because one went around, the other drove straight over. Clearly the fault of the second vehicle, but still.. we have many such idiots on the road - and the accidents can occur.

They could however keep the red circle as it is and officially state that "driving from Douglas, you should drive over the red circle". Simple. That way everyone knows, and everyone can follow it safely. It is a whole lot easier, quicker and safer to drive over the red circle. The present problem is.... no-one seems to know what the 'correct procedure' is, so we all act on it in different ways.

I suspect the idea is that driving around the red circle slows traffic down a bit and enables the roundabout to work properly.

If people drive straight over the roundabout while barely slowing down from 30mph then it isn't going to work properly.

I agree that the lanes are tight though.

That definitely makes a big difference if your coming from gov's hill direction, if people on the right take it properly you have time to get out, if they cut accross you don't! Problem is gauging who is going to do what! Of course if you "pull out" on someone who cuts the roundabout it appears to be your fault...

Stupid fucking roundabout / Stupid fucking drivers!

People coming from gov hill direction should give way to people coming from Douglas direction, surely?? No matter which way they take..

The whole "red circle" thing is a absolute fucking joke. numptie fucking idiots making me cross.....

annnnnd relax... ;)

They must have a broken measuring tape.

There is not even enough room for 2 cars in the filter lanes as you approach Douglas from Onchan.

How can be believe that there is sufficient room on the roundabout for 2 cars as well.

Next thing they will be telling us that the Groves Road junction is a great success

Yes, they have to give way.

They can also proceed when there's an opportunity to do so.

However, as 3v0 points out, there's a big difference between a car that's going to slow right down and go around the red circle and a numpty that just drives straight over it and hardly slows down at all. In the first instance people coming from Governors Hill get a change to enter the roundabout safely, in the second instance they're left looking the culprit by the person that's not using it correctly

The layout there is such that if you are coming from the sea terminal direction, wishing to go up Lord Street, if you keep to the left of the cobbles, a) people coming from the south quay direction assume that you are turning left, and/or b) you get in the way of people in the left hand lane who ARE turning left. Frankly, I go over the cobbles, whether there is an overlooking police station or not.

The Governors Hill roundabout is similar, but with red bits instead of cobbles - probably to avoid bikers going a over t. Again, if I am in the right hand lane, to avoid people who are correctly using the left hand lane, and give them plenty of space, I will drive over the red bit.

What a load of cobblers.
