Really good festival, and festival fringe. Shame about the restrictions imposed by the police on landlords, as a few marquees would have helped to increase the atmos at the event. A couple of years ago there were 10 arrests from the reported 10000 in attendance. If the 50 plus coppers that were at the fest were in Strand St on any Friday or Saturday I wonder how many arrests there would have been? The Police have really screwed the festival fringe- is that what the commissioners wanted? The whole event would be better off if moved to Peel or Port Erin. Bigger venues to suit varied types of act. Shame that some of Laxey's venues failed to enter into the spirit. How much was raised at the Mines for the Red Cross with Karaoke? Why does the New Inn continue to profit from the event with absolute zero input? Laxey has had ten years of input worth a conservative £150,000 per year. It is the the busiest weekend of the year for the Coop- they didn't spend a bean on the Festival, not even an advert. Neither did the Mona Lisa Restaurant. Tight bastards!

The "Big Wheel Blues" main event was organised by "the organising committee" (nothing to do with Laxey Commissioners etc) and the only official event was the one at the Riverside with a ticket limit of around 200 people. This one was a fundraising event for the Red Cross.

The "fringe" part wasn't organised by anyone - it was down to the local pubs to do whatever they wanted, knowing that there would be loads of music fans in Laxey that weekend who didn't have tickets for the main event, so the natural choice would be to "have some bands playing" in their pubs - which is what the Queens, Bridge Inn, Mines and Shore did.

As I recall, the New Inn has never been involved in the Blues Festival or the Fringe and doesn't have any band playing. It was up to the licencees if they wanted to apply to the licencing court for permission to erect marquees. I heard that none of them did as the cost involved for one or two evenings was too much and they would prefer to keep it inside their existing premises.

As these premises weren't part of the official festival, none of the money raised would have been given to the Red Cross - it is just profit for the pubs. This is the same as say "Port Erin Lifeboat Day". This is a fundraiser for the RNLI, but don't tell me that every Ice Cream Shop, Pub, Bar and Restuarant in Port Erin gives their profit for the day to the RNLI?

By the way, there were around 12 or 13 Police on duty each night which isn't a lot if you think there are 6 "full to the brim" pubs spread throughout the village which all need looking after.
