Inter-racial Marriage

I often think how much the world has changed - my granny knew stage coaches, and saw the world shrink via planes, satelites and shuttles.

I'm fascinated thinking back to when the world was different and how technology and social attitudes have changed.

This story really shocked me - this case wasn't settled until 1967 - that doesn't seem that long ago, that different to today - satelites, jumbo jets etc all existed then - but the social attitudes seem totally alien.

Not long after our wedding, we were awakened in the middle of the night in our own bedroom by deputy sheriffs and actually arrested for the "crime" of marrying the wrong kind of person. Our marriage certificate was hanging on the wall above the bed. The state prosecuted Richard and me, and after we were found guilty, the judge declared: "Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix." He sentenced us to a year in prison, but offered to suspend the sentence if we left our home in Virginia for 25 years exile.

How fast we forget, i came from a mixed marriage--catholic and protestant, laughable now but not then.

Seems that nice priest from St Mary's came to our house in Hope st and told my very naive young mother that all her children were bastards in the eyes of God and all of us were condemed to an eternity of torment, nice eh!

That priest still legged it every time he saw my father for years after, seems he moderated his views of Gods opinion after a back handed girly slap from my father.

I really hope to see an end to shit like that in my time. :(

I had something similar; I am a Liverpool supporter and my wife's family are all staunch Evertonians. Which is why we are in exile on the Isle of Man.

We are very lucky where we live. No prejudice is trivial but they are profoundly stupid.

Unfortunately social attitudes have not changed in some places. Not so long ago the Balkans and Rwanda. Nowadays Darfur, Kosovo, Indonesia (recent moves to persecute the Ahmadayyans), Iraq etc etc...sadly almost always promoted by scheming bigots to retain their control over the fearful - and so often fuelled by poverty and ignorance.

When I married (early 70s) my late wife and I were required to place an announcement in the newspaper that had to include the fact that she was Chinese (on the basis that she was not a UK national). When I married again in Australia there was none of that nonsense.

My father was an Evertonian and my mother supports Liverpool. She managed to brainwash me before he did, so I'm a red...

...married to a Manchester United supporter

Chinahand,

Ah , good old Lovings v Virginia. how about some more of Mildred's own words to remind us of how things still aren't perfect....

Surrounded as I am now by wonderful children and grandchildren, not a day goes by that I don't think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the "wrong kind of person" for me to marry. I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry. Government has no business imposing some people's religious beliefs over others. Especially if it denies people's civil rights.

I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard's and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That's what Loving, and loving, are all about.

...and some comment from the Judge in the first instance to explain why perfection may be some way away:

Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.
