Woo! Congrats to my uncle :)

 

For real? Your Uncle found that... wow. It's a nice example of a 10th century pommel and cross (there is another find that is very similar).

 

I saw the images, but I couldn't find an image of the cross guard that had greater detail, does your Uncle have a better image of the cross?

 

This kind of find fascinates me as, if the cross is that shape and not a casting defect then it could well be a sword catcher, very unusual for the period... well if other finds are anything to go by.

 

If you can help me out that would be great, either way congratulate your Uncle for me :-)

I went to school with Robert Farrer back in the 60's, one of the founder members of the Metal Detectorists Club...you couldn't wish to meet a nicer bloke... WTG Rob...
