Pat Ayres
They're asking next week but the work is scheduled to start next month, fancy signing a contract when you haven't got the money. (MEA anybody) How about doing Ramsey swimming pool at the same time?
manshimajin
They're asking next week but the work is scheduled to start next month, fancy signing a contract when you haven't got the money. Sounds like quality public service management in inaction.... In terms of spending taxpayer funds and balancing budgets how does this rate compared with putting fluoride in drinking water? Both are to do with children's health. I should like to think that asbestos was given priority over teeth. Incidentally I have been told (open to correction) that there is little problem with asbestos once it is in situ as long as you don't start fiddling with it. The danger times are at installation and removal. Still better to get rid of the stuff - hope whatever it is replaced with doesn't turn out to be a problem in 50 years time. Edit: Just followed the thread on the BBC site to find the following: For more than half a century, the construction fibre asbestos has been used in buildings for the insulation of pipes and boilers, as fire protection in walls, and even roofing and guttering. It generally does not pose a risk to health as long as it remains undisturbed and in good condition. Should the Dept. of Education should put its contract 'on hold' until the funding is sorted? RC-Drift.com
A quick drive through Willaston will open your eyes - asbestos guttering, soil pipes, down pipes and some houses still with asbestos bath panels ...there's plenty of them too!
keyboarder
Some types are much nastier than others but there is a little hysteria surrounding asbestos. There's loads of it in all sorts of buildings on the island.
