Alan Sugar To Leave Amstrad

Recommended Posts

I learned to fly at Barton Aerodrome in the mid-80's. Imagine a big grass field surrounded by motorways, canals, pylons and houses and you've got the basic idea. It's a great place to learn to fly, as there's little margin for error so you need to be pretty sharp.

It was the original Manchester Airport before the war and the later development of Ringway. I think John Whittaker's Peel Holdings own it now, along with the nearby Trafford Centre. It has the oldest continually used control tower in the UK, and the longest-running flying school IIRC.

For someone who habitually flies from 'proper' airports with acres of tarmac stretching beyond your nose on final approach, it'll be a bit of a challenge, especially if the grass is wet (slippery, and with no braking).

Of course, this is a complete non-story - the equivalent of a parking ding at Tesco's. But my media colleagues LOVE to big up aeroplane stories to the realms of near-disaster.
