triskelion
Mmmm. Oh, uncovered this gem from Mr Creegen MHK: "If we vote for this, we will, in a few months’ time, have £6 million for a new control tower, because they will not be able to see the end of the new runway 825 extension. So, by going for this, we are actually virtually saying we have got to go for another £6 million. That concerns me." He did vote for it though, as did everyone else except PK and Malarky. WTF
Sigh. Most frustrating is that we can do nothing about it now. we could DO nothing about it before as it was possibly a done deal ( had to insert possibly for legal reasons ) it's a shame the accademic paper dimwald poo poo'd looking into business and safety options for the airport isn't yet in the public domain as far as i know. i'm sure should it come out it will prove very enlightening. and don't forget the powers that be had the information but chose to ignore it,possibly ( said it again ) as it may have had an adverse effect on jolly's and brown envelopes. triskelion
Argh, the under pass idea sounds so much better. This is why we need better public consultation.
finaldestination
I think you will find that extending the other way was not an option....well not unless you want to knock down houses in Janets Corner, Victoria Road and, possibly even the Sidings Pub ...too high a price to pay! Insomniac
The work will involve re-profiling, resurfacing and strengthening of the runway to smooth out the high and low points as well as upgrading the runway lighting. Compared to IOM this is a minor makeover. See also jersey runway Is all the labour local? flying in specialised engineers adds costs as does working unsocible hours through the night. If the Ballasalla bypass was built the road at the other end could be as good as closed.
manshimajin
See also jersey runway I see from this that: The UK CAA Civil Aviation Publication 168 requires that an Aerodrome (Runway) Reference Code should be the greater of the Take Off Distance Available (TODA) or the Accelerate Stop Distance Available (ASDA) for that runway. A Code 4C runway requires the greater of those distances to be 1800 metres or over. The figures for the runway at Jersey Airport are: * Runway 27 TODA 2469 metres * Runway 09 TODA 1889 metres So Jersey Runway 27 is considerably longer than Ronaldsway's though articles on Jersey Airport quote the equivalent of about 1680 metres as its runway length. A 4C runway needs to be at least 1800 metres which is also a bit longer than our runway assuming the goal is to handle the likes of easyJet in future. Tugger
Why not just have traffic lights by the airport? It's not as though there is a plane taking off every minute.

Don't let the DoT get hold of this - they'll want a roundabout.

Frances
I think you need barriers - Sumburgh airport Shetland has these as the road crosses the runway (I seem to recall a road crossing at each end of runway)
