Latest directive from the lemon squeezer is that parking regulations on the prom are to be enforced to the letter

This means that all vans parked on the prom will be booked, so all those crews who have paid a small fortune to get here for the rally will now be fined if they happen to be staying in a hotel on the prom

Brilliant, we pay one department to attract visitors to the island and another to piss them off when they get here

Joined up government ? my arse

Another thread raised the issue of 'bloated' public service - this is a good example. Destructive to the economy. But then it does come from the rounadbout kings...

Many years ago when I was in Cyprus there was a scheme that allowed tourist rental cars (which had special number plates) much more liberal parking rules than applied to locals. Could something similar be done for visitors coming to the island? This could be based on the fact that the tax disc on the parked vehicle is not an IOM one. It needs joined up thinking and creativity to be 'tourist friendly'.

What is the Department of Tourism doing about it?

This may be a silly question, but why should a van - if parked properly - be booked?

Vans aren't allowed to park on the prom (at least not in the diagonal spaces not sure about t'other side)

Thanks - I presume this means long wheelbase things that stick out half way towards the tram tracks, and not a simple escort type or standard transit?

It also applies to swb transits & pick up trucks

The prom was designed for tourists in the days before cars, it is also a main traffic route, so if the hotels are operate as such then it is the responsibility of the DOT to organise the prom in such a way as to allow tourists to park.

This could be solved by moving the horse tram tracks to the walkway and allowing diagonal parking on both sides, but the DOT would rather fine visitors into parking in one of its pay & display car parks miles away

There was suppose to be herring bone parking like Loch Prom at the Summer Hill end of the Prom, It was advertised in the Plannig Dept and in the Newspaper but has never been followed up, Its crazy that part of the Prom has such high restrictions but from The Gaiety to Summer Land you can park your cars for sale or Camper Vans for weeks at a time in a 24 hour zone and nothing ever gets done about it. Traffic Wardens and the DOT only seem to be interested in the Loch Prom area.

Why dont they just open up Summer Land and we can have a big used Car Lot there, There would be plenty of room on the Prom then.

seems it's 'large' vehicles, but fails to define what a 'large' vehicle is !

Notice from the Department of Transport

No parking on Seaside of Loch Promenade for large vehicles

The Department of Transport would like to remind all motorists that parking in the diagonal bays on Loch Promenade is for cars only and it is illegal to park any large vehicle on the seaward side of the promenade.

Despite the advisory signs placed along Loch Promenade, there have been many instances where larger vehicles, such as large vans, have been parked in the diagonal bays and have caused an obstruction to passing motorists, to people walking on the footway and those waiting to cross the road who cannot see or be seen by motorists. When parking in these diagonal bays, larger vehicles also tend to reverse in too far which means that the back of the vehicle is overhanging the edge of the pavement causing an obstruction for pedestrians.

At this time of year any large vehicle parked in this area can cause disruption for vehicles trying to pass horse trams and effectively makes the traffic lane narrow and hard to negotiate and adds to delays on this stretch of road during the busy summer months.

Bruce Hannay, Director of Highways said: ‘We would advise all contractors carrying out works in the vicinity of Loch Promenade to temporarily park and unload their van and then move their vehicle to a safe area. We would advise people to use Parade Street car park where possible as its bays will accommodate larger vehicles safely. This advice also applies to overnight parking by vans belonging to visiting contractors staying on the Loch Promenade.’

Large vehicles which are parked in the diagonal bays on the seaward side of Loch Promenade will be subject to a fixed penalty notice of £40.

I thnk the restriction is perfectly reasonable. I do not see why long wheel base vans or lorries should expect to park "sticking" out into traffic whether or not they belong to residents or visitors. Presumably you would argue that HGVs should also be allowed to park similarly if they relate to such events, etc.

I have a much simpler solution, park where they are allowed on the town side of the prom and maybe if they can not park right outside their hotel they could try the novelty of walking a few paces.

Agree, have had trouble negotiating round the back of these large vans while walking as they're reversed with their backs over the pavement. This seems like a perfectly sensible restriction.

Why would anyone expect the Government to display common sense in this or any other situation?

The Government is manned by the lowest common denominator and is wholly reliant upon the private sector to pay their over inflated salaries etc. It is just as well that there salaries are not performance related, they'd all be f*****! Rant over, it's been a bad day so far and bound to get worse!

They should also book the along the full length of the prom from the sea terminal to summerhill all the wankers who think its ok to double park whilst a) waiting for a space b) nipipng into the shop or delivering and c) dropping off a fare. If the is no space then you cant fkin stop. It should also include tossers who park in motorcycle spaces near Jaks and motorcycles who park in disbled space there
