No Money At Present For Unit - Teare

Pathetic isn't it. MHKs need to get these priorities sorted, instead of wasting millions on grandeous schemes most of which we don't need or are not necessary. What will make the island an unpleasant place to live in future, will be the failure to deal with the drug and alcohol associated social problems and incidents that are now starting to become rife over here.

Whilst not necessarily questioning the capacity of Government to spend money on projects of questionable value, its important to remember that the unit would have to be funded out of the departmental budget, not the capital budget. The capital budget itself is generally allocated on a year by year basis, but they don't become publicly debated until they are due to go before Tynwald, often a week before.

The need for such a centre has been talked about for years. Any hiding behind accountaneering doesn't cut it for me.

Hey. Moving the fire station to a place where it will be blocked in (either by road closures or parked cars/bikes blocking the road) during the TT is far more important than such things

Perhaps there's an opportunity for private and public funding to work together. The island could be a perfect location for a properly resourced rehab unit - somewhere in the countryside where visiting 'celebs' would have a reasonable degree of privacy (and little temptation to stray since the 'entertainment' centres are rubbish) - with the government supplying the land and assisting with the building and/or conversion costs in return for a Health Service facility as part of the deal.

It is interesting to see how the MHKs decide on behalf of their employers when it comes to a choice between capital expenditure on social issues and transport.

Maybe we should legalise (and tax) some other social drugs in addition to nicotine and alcohol to fund rehab.

How much capital is needed?

The 'capital' would be peanuts.

£2 - £3 million could have you a fantastic facility. It's the continued running costs that would mount up.

Still, as AT says it's these problems that will be a far greater burden for the next generations to bear, than having to wait an extra 5 minutes at the fucking QB.

Why can't those in power see sense?

This isn't a capital project, this is ongoing Departmental funding of almost £500 000 a year, which is a substantial amount to find.

EDIT: The facility is built, the department just can't afford to run an in-patient facility at this time.

A fairly small cull of the civil service should sort it.
