P.K.
great if you can avoid the drunken British yobs on stag weekends Hardly difficult if you hazard a guess at where they might be. Errr... the red light district perhaps? Agree about Krakow, that would be #2 on my list.
Skeddan
If you choose UK option, Enterprise Rent a Car do cheap weekend deals (£12 a day with unlimited mileage for 3 day minimum over weekend), but have to pick up on a Friday before 5pm and drop off after 8am on the Monday. (get your own excess damage insurance policy if you can) As for where to go depends on what you like. If you fly to London could go to Kent. Maybe stay in B&B in Canterbury and tour around from there - e.g. Hever Castle - see where Anne Boleyn lived, tour the castle (which is cute and has some good paintings), maybe see some jousting, enjoy the wonderful grounds, and go boating on the lake. Whistable is very nice too. Alternatively you could drive to Suffolk which is lovely - lots of very nice places between Ipswich and Southwold, but also places in Essex worth visiting on the way - e.g. Maldon. If not for you, perhaps go to Salisbury (City Lodge are cheap and ok), and can tour thereabouts (e.g. Wilton, Shaftesbury, Montacute, Stonehenge, Glastonbury), or go a bit further afield and go to Somerset way - Cheddar, Lynmouth, Porlock, Exmoor, etc. (Bridgwater is a convenient base). Closer to London is the Thames - Henley, Shiplake, Marlow etc. (some lovely walks / bike rides along the river, nice towns and pretty Oxfordshire countryside - don't need a car, and Great Western rail do a go as you please weekend rail pass for this area). You can find B&Bs for about £55 for a double per night if you hunt around a bit, or if you want to cut costs, go camping. (If you go to Paris, it's possible to find reasonable hotels in the Marais district which is a great area to stay - near Saint Paul metro. Walkable to Louvre etc. and old Jewish quarter is nearby). Brittany is a great place to go also - e.g. Quimper to Vannes and Carnac. Verona is great as is Bergamo, Padua and Venice - there's a first rate cheap hotel in Verona if your interested. ai_Droid
Went to Windemere about a year ago with the mrs - took the car over & we stayed in a B&B for a weekend. Cheap, simple & all very easy & hassle free.Bargain, very relaxing & enjoyable. Will definitely be going back there. Second that. We recently stayed in a top place in Ambleside, was only a short drive from Heysham and the fairly cheap b&b had a pool, sauna and hot tub. Was perfect and nothing like London prices. bluemonday
West coast of Ireland or Dublin. Yesterdays Telegraph had some excellent short break deals for CIs. Problem being with most of them, you have to fly from the south coast.
manshimajin
Concur with positive comments about Northern Ireland - and also add in the Strangford Lough area - lot's of good places and good food. If it's Europe would recommend Bruges, Krakow or, in particular, Vienna. Great coffee houses, cakes, old buildings and very easy to get around. As an alternative in UK go to Leeds/Bradford and head for the Yorkshire Dales, Richmond, York, Whitby...? Really depends on what style of weekend your wife likes. Albert Tatlock
Suggestions please. Take her to a footy match, and if she's really worked hard this summer, onto Woollies for a new iron.

When Skies Are Grey
We recently stayed in a top place in Ambleside, Agreed about Ambleside...love the place. Country pubs, nice places to eat, great walks and stunning scenery. Plenet of B&Bs or cottages to rent...nothing better than a pint next to a roaring log fire after a good long walk. Sophie =)
What about somewhere like Rome. Really scenic there. Not sure about the cost though...

Jimcalagon
Just got back from a week in Ireland - County Clare - and it only rained twice, once for 3 days and once for 4 days. Some lovely guest houses there as well.

Ambleside is nice, but is always busy and the traffic going in and out of the town is pretty horrendous. I would try and find somewhere a bit more off the beaten track. If you want to do cheap, stay at the Ambleside Youth Hostel, right on the lake, more like a hotel than a hostel and you should be able to book a twin room. 15 minutes walk into the town centre. Albert Tatlock
I stopped in Kendal on my trip to the lakes this year. Bed and breakfast £25 single, £40 double, very clean and an excellent breakfast. With a car it's dead easy to head to the lakes from there <30 mins.. Weather too crappy to risk without a car IMO.
