Frances
that probably explains why they are staying half a mile off shore with no-one visible on deck - all tied to the modern replacement for the mast!
Skeddan
anyone know why Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel RFA Mounts Bay (L3008) is cruising within Peel Bay ? Pretty impressive vessel - packs more than enough for a full scale invasion of IoM . Lucky the UK is responsible for IoM's defence . Maybe it's around to 'fly the flag' and remind IoM that it is getting it's money's worth from the £2m+ p.a. it pays to the UK for protection and defence. Karellen
If it is true that we pay £2M to the British Government for "defence" then it really is an outrage - money down the drain. I for one would much rather see this ploughed into education.

I for one would much rather see this ploughed into education. In 2007 the 'voluntary' contribution for defence and international representation for 2006-2007 was £2,424,118.77. Clicky This seems to be paid as a 'token of appreciation' - not that the UK would no longer be responsible for IoM's defence or international representation if it was not paid. Don't you think some 'appreciation' ought to be shown for being a Crown Dependency? You might rather see this spent elsewhere, but the people in charge of RFA Mounts Bay think otherwise. Skeddan
(OK, Guernsey isn't so appreciative and maybe puts the money into education instead) Guernsey: Contribution to UK Defence; Hansard Written Answers, 28 Jun 2004 Lord Smith of Clifton (Shadow Minister, Northern Ireland Affairs; Liberal Democrat) asked Her Majesty's Government: What contribution Guernsey makes, financial or otherwise, to the United Kingdom's defence; and how this contribution is calculated. Lord Falconer of Thoroton (Secretary of State, Department for Constitutional Affairs; Labour Since 1 April 1987, Guernsey has made a voluntary annual contribution towards the costs of defence and international representation undertaken by the United Kingdom. The contribution has two elements. The insular authorities have assumed responsibility for the maintenance of the Alderney breakwater (which was completed in 1865 to shelter the British fleet). Prior to April 1987 the cost of maintaining the breakwater was met by Her Majesty's Government. At 2003 prices the average annual cost since 1987 associated with the breakwater is £780,000. Guernsey also remits to the UK the fees collected for the issue of British passports. These amounted to £216,201 in 2003. Guernsey looks after the Alderney breakwater (no longer of any military use and classified as a historic monument), so contribution to UK for defence = £0.00. It also pays fees collected for issue of British passports. Maybe IoM is more at risk of being attacked than Guernsey so should pay more to show its appreciation? Sebrof
It's the ugliest ship I've ever seen. Huge great slab at the front, which must create enormous wind drag at speed. S
