The Godfather of Manx House
Swings and roundabouts? Jobs boost as HSBC recruits 18 new staff http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/Jobs-boost-...uits.4503981.jp Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Good news is not allowed. We're all doomed or something. I don't buy it myself. I'm deffo of the opinion that we are somewhat coccooned over here from it all. I do however belive that house prices will plateau for some time. Can't see any big drops occuring. Then again, it's all guesswork from me, so hey ?... ...GOMH*...

Jimcalagon
I've heard from well placed sources that Harmony Homes laid off 3 staff this week, and Crystals are closing their Onchan office. This is just the start of things to come, and it makes me laugh to think that so many people are under the illusion that the IoM is immune from the world's problems and we'll all be fine here. The overpriced coffee shops and sandwich shops will be hit next, followed by pubs and restaurants...they will all fall like dominoes and 2009 will be interesting over here. It probably won't be such a bad thing, if it shakes this Island up from its complacent slumber. You don't need to sound such a smug twat about it though. These aren't just numbers - they are actual people with partners and children. Apart from the estate agents. "We don't need to destroy Capitalism - Capitalism will destroy itself" - Karl Marx. Bambster
You are right, they are people with families and home. They will now be stuck at home in their very light encompassing living rooms, taking toilet breaks from Jeremy Kyle in rather luxuriously romanesque-tiled bathrooms with extravagant fixtures and fittings, not to mention afternoon naps in a well-lit master bedroom with window/en-suit toilet facilities. thebees
Or level out into something more sensible like socialism. I notice lots of business people are getting into charity work, it looks quite good. If the governments fail at least there are these kinds of people to save the world..or something like that
spermann
I've heard from well placed sources that Harmony Homes laid off 3 staff this week, and Crystals are closing their Onchan office. I heard that the local branch of AIG was letting everyone go. We've a Merrils too, wonder how they're getting on? There is a shed load of work around though. Can you expand on where or what source "that the local branch of AIG was letting everyone go" came from?

gazza
I've heard from well placed sources that Harmony Homes laid off 3 staff this week You heard wrong...... One person is leaving (to move on to other things) but they have also just employed 2 others. I'm not sure who your 'well placed' sources are but they are a little far from the mark. O so we not all doomed then, thank god for that, I must go and put all me saveings back in the bank, because as soon as i heard that 3 ppl had be laid off, i took it all out as the credit crunch had hit here, was worried for me job as well, diden get any sleep last night just the worrying of it all, I see dandara are applying for more staff, so the credit crunch must be really hitting home, up till last month anyway, the shortage of houses per year on the island was about 300 a year shortfull, yes that can all change in a week, but at the moment with everything falling apart in the uk and usa the IOM is still holding well, when thay start to make major sackings, and the paper has no jobs in for ppl then i start worring, and i would think most ppl will just have to cut back on things that thay now call essential when maybe 10 -15 years ago thay were a luxury to most ppl, so u cant afford the new car, or the fuck off big tv, so what not the end of the world is it,

I notice lots of business people are getting into charity work, it looks quite good. If the governments fail at least there are these kinds of people to save the world..or something like that But that isn't anything to do with socialism. Businesses trying to emphasis charity work are just putting on a friendly face. Anf charity work isn't related to socialist ideals and purpose. %age
and Crystals are closing their Onchan office. i did hear on the grapvine chrystals of onchan were closing because they are only selling 3 to 4 houses a month in the last 3 months, don't kno how true that is..... I believe the Onchan branch is closing because the person running it is retiring. The location in the Onchan precinct hardly takes much passing trade compared to Victoria Street Douglas. Best thing to do was to close it down. I understand this was all considered before the phrase "credit crunch" came into existence.
hboy
House prices won't fall as quickly here as they have been in the UK. We can expect to see a levelling off and maybe a slight dip, but nothing to write about. Bollocks. That's just like all those statements - Britains biggest bank can't fail, or the worlds largest insurance company won't need bailing out. Its wishful thinking and its wrong. House prices could fall here quite dramatically and quite quickly, but lets all sit here with our heads up our arses thinking that its inconcievable.
