It has not even started to effect the island but it will, this vision of everything is going to be fine is pure madness.

One bank lays off 5000 people in london this week and every one says it won't happen here lol.

It will effect us because the main employment sector is directly effected.

Get a grip, i aint saying run to the hills but i am saying be prepared it will happen here.

Also as for shortage of housing i know a guy who got knocked back for his first time buyers house because the bank wanted more deposit from him, hard to save when everything is costing more ?

well i can honastly say it not going to bother me at all,

in fact its prob going to help me more than if it never happined,

so really no worrys from me

I am sure you can honestly say that you don't THINK it is going to affect you at all.

But I am not sure that your imagination is up to the task of thinking of all the ways in which it MIGHT affect you, and probably will.

Well I understand one of the main banks here has put a moratorium on mortgages from this week. Its interesting that if people can't borrow money to buy, others still believe that property here will just level off with no real damage done.

What I have noticed is that there are lot more For Sale signs around - most probably because houses that have been on the market for some time are not moving so the stock of houses for sale is gradually growing. Has this passed through as yet to prices?

What I don't see is much discussion of what can be done to strengthen the economic base. Given our reliance on financial services there has to be some flow on to the Island from the mess that the sector has got itself into in the UK and USA. Will the Chief Minister's dinner in London counter this?

It would seem prudent to be thiking of how to broaden the base. Tourism (particularly expanding the core reach beyond Northern and Midlands England), environmental related services and industries, organic farming exports, encouraging medium/high net worth retirees? What do others think?

Are there areas of infrastructure investment that should also be considered that would make the island more attractive to new money coming in?

The point of the dinner in London is to try and boost the Island's profile. The economic future of the Island still lies in financial services, and it is important to remember there are many different aspects within this; not all of which will be badly affected by current economic conditions in the UK and US.

Not Tourism again! This will never, ever, be a major contributor to the Manx economy. Nor should it be. It is completely seasonal and our towns would probably end up looking just as shitty as Blackpool.

If there were money to be made in Organic farming, Manx farmers would be doing more of it. Sales have dropped off massively however, and given the general expense of farming anyway, farmers are unlikely to go for it right now, especially when a substantial number of UK organic farmers are packing it in.

Better air links with The City would be good though. Probably.

Erm I applied for a mortgage and the bank wanted £3,000, whoo hoo!!! Not much by anyones standards!!

What's the context of the £3,000? When?

Was it £3,000 as an arrangement fee for a mortgage?

£3,000 as a deposit?

Actually, £3,000 as a deposit would be quite low. In days gone by the minimum, usual, deposit was 5%. On a £100,000 mortage that would be £5,000.

Everybody in the City who might be able to make use of the IOM is already very well aware of it. They may not be so aware that the chief minister is an electrician with a funny moustache. Best to keep him at home.

It is not very clever to rule out anything which might help to bring in money. Remember that the TT IS tourism (it's even in the name!). As for being seasonal, the answer there is to try and identify off-season possibilties. I have never seen the casino promoted in the UK, for instance, (though that doesn't mean it hasn't been, just that it hasn't been done very effectively). A new slant on fish and chips, perhaps.

Finding ways to boost Manx farming, and thereby cut food imports, would be an excellent idea for lots of reasons.

Seems the finance industry didn't think so, or we might still have Euromanx.

Deposit as a first time buyer, mortgage would have been topped up with the government grant and loan.

There's still a sizable % of influential people in the UK who know nothing about the IOM. Yeah, Chief Minister has a shop...the House of Commons is full of lawyers, etc, screwing the UK taxpayer with their expenses. I know which I'd rather have...at least I can ring our politicians at home and have an argument with them!

The IOM as an alternative Blackpool...no thanks. There's loads of casinos in the UK...far nicer than ours.

Agreed. I believe the industry is looking at ways to compete with off-Island products both here and in the UK.

Euromanx were brought down by having unsustainable low fares trying to compete with Flybe (and being run incredibly poorly). The success of the City route wasn't enough to bail them out.
