Rocketman
Higher than the height at which you'd want to be on the bugger !
monasqueen
The Beaufort Scale gives an indication of wave heights that can be expected at different wind speeds. Snaefell and Manamana should not be out in service when the wind speed reaches force 7, as the average predicted wave height would then normally be above their 3.5 metre restriction. Ben tends to cancel sailings when the expected wind speed exceeds force 9. Not because she cannot take it, but because of the increased likelihood of cargo, cars, etc being damaged when they are bounced about (and because it then gets just a bit too uncomfortable for a lot of passengers). Most "conventional" ferries do not have a wave height restriction.
Rocketman
... Force Nine is therefore at 95% on the vomit potential "Pukeometer TM" !
Snaefell050
The sister (new) is alleged to have cost US$45m. In 1999, when she was built, the £ was worth about $1.65. That makes the new vessel worth a bit over £27m. What is "Manamana" costing, including the tart up job? About £23m? And this is a 3rd hand 10 year old vessel. Bargain gas guzzler. Funny, didn't Ben cost about the same? The "MANANNAN Project" cost around £20 million, with the refit quoted by numerous sources to be £3 million. This logically puts the vessel at a cost of £17 million. The BEN-MY-CHREE was constructed in 1998 for £24 million.
