Lee54
Its been rumoured for a while now that Tesco are to build a new Super Store on the outskirts of Douglas, What will happen to the town centers and the local shops. On the run up the Christmas Tesco have announced today that they are to reduce the cost of toys by 60%, this cant be of much help to the small retailers who depend on the Christmas sales to boost any income. Gladys
Best comment about Tescos I have heard for a while is the suggestion by Juan Watterson for Tesco to register a local subsidiary for its IOM operations. That way the VAT benefit stays here. Good call in my book. All the rest is speculation and crabby IOM isolationism.

I don't understand that, doesn't the common purse mean all vat receipts go to the uk treasury and are then divvied out? Lee54: Tesco have been fucking over the independent shop owner for years, why's this news?
John Wright
it makes no difference under the common purse for a small area we have a surprising number of supermarkets and discount stores Problem is we do not have the full range and they do not serve us well Tesco's charge more in IOM. At least M&S charge the same i any store in British Isles tax questions in Channel Islands part Shoprite does not know if it is a discounter or up market, it is schizoid. The coop doen't appear much better We need a rationalisation First lets have a LIDL or Netto or Shoprite go back to your roots Second lets have an M&S food store with full range Third lets have a Waitrose or a Booths with real specialist stuff
WTF
typical lawyer, telling us we have a surprising amount of stores (as in more than necessary ), and then at the bottom wants even more of the ones he would like to see with the full range. so not only have the local grocers and butchers been kicked in the goolies, he wants the clothes shops and toy shops and electrical retailers to face the same competition!! that comes from the same type of people who whine about there being too many cars on the road but want OTHER people to cut down to make room for theirs. if all those whining got rid of their own cars there'd be loads of room and no congestion. I'm not surprised tescos charge more, it must cost more to get the stuff here. Shoprite (and tesco) do the smart thing and try to cater for a wider range of customers than m&s, because that's the profile that gets them more customers. They've got a 'finest' range and they've got value ranges, good, you get the choice. People who like to pay too much for silly overpackaged ready made stuff can go to M&S. And I really like the coop, good sized stores in locations that you don't have to drive miles to get to with reasonable prices and a good range of stuff. Only downer with the coop is they seem to have some sort of care in the community employment scheme, what's going on there? Definitely don't want more supermarkets or chains, I'll stick with my butcher and farm produce as much as poss, ta.

John
I am sure I have read somewhere that there are certain products that Tesco can not sell under their planning permission. Again I am sure it included white goods (that they already sell) Toys, Books and Clothing. I may be not 100% correct on all the products they can or can't sell, but I know there was defiantly a restriction. I also stand by Juan Wattersons idea that these companies should be made to register in the IOM, are they not just doing what we are accused of as a tax haven and that is taking income from the source countries economy? Things are not as simple as all that. The profits would still leave the island, and most companies here don't pay much tax anyway (though their employees do) - that's why many of them are here. Plus, the VAT still comes back here.

Eh? If they were registered here, we'd face more accusations of tax havenism, as they'd not pay tax on the profits. I don't know if they are or aren't by the way, and really don't see what difference it makes. Can you explain the benefits please?
Mutley
Yup another vote for Lidl. Surprisingly good food and very cheap. Come on over guys - we won't intern you this time.
John
Then again they do supply the wages for a large amount of people and that does benefit the economy, think i need a coffee and put my brain in gear. Also email Juan W and ask him exactly why it will benefit the economy.

I think they would have to pay tax in the UK on their profits from foreign subs (assuming they are UK based)
