What Should Replace Woolworths

Blacks, Cotswold, Tiso etc i.e a proper specialist outdoor clothing and equipment store !

Our fiddly little Peter Storm shop ( Millets) doesnt cut it on an Island promoting sport and outdoor pursuits. Think of all the tents, stoves, sleeping bags, waterproofs they'd sell at TT for a start !

We're very well served with Newsons!

Youve obviously never been to a Cotsword, Blacks or Tiso store then. Even better if Newsomes could match their level of stock, choice and technical equiptment but sadly not, its a bit "fork andles" in there ! and it needs to be on the highstreet !

Course I have, I holiday in the lakes! But there's a slightly larger market for walking poles there than here!

Specialist shops like that don't belong on the high street as they're not really impulse purchases. People will travel to the right shop for things like that. Except to Ramsey, ugh.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it split into several outlets after a refit.

I beg to differ ! If you provide the choice and the right shopping environment then it will be used. Walking, fishing, golfing and boating/sailing are some of the most popular activities on the Island (naturally). We all own at least one decent waterproof jacket of some description (and walking shoes, boots), its a must in our climate, but how many of them were bought locally?. They are being wooped by the internet or from trips away.

No one thought there was room for a Tesco here or loads of coffee shops but they are all birsting at the seams !

Build it and they will come !

They are which is why it's even more frustrating. They serve a different audience though. Millets serves the casual consumer( like the old army and navy stores), Blacks serves the serious outdoor pursuits market.

Why are they in every high street in every town in the British Isles then ? They clearly havent a clue !

Newsons, Millets, TK Maxx and intersport all do good outdoor stuff. I just think we're covered in that regard. There used to be another outdoor shop, think it was called 'the outdoor shop' that went bust. It's just not in huge demand here. Most manxies spend their weekends in front of the telly, not out walking.

When was the last time you had to queue in either millets or newsons?

Incidently, 20% off everything at millets if you print this out:

Obviously a matter of opinion. I've tried and do try all of our local shops first but none have what I want on a regular basis which is why I've spend about £500 in the last 6 months in Belfast, Ambleside, Plymouth, Leeds, Manchester and on-line !.. but I dont want to !
