Lee54
As of today IOM Breweries have slashed the price of its drinks in its own pubs. Larger down to £2-25 a pint Mild and Bitter down to £2-00 a pint 50p off Guiness How can they afford to do it now or does it just show that they have been making vast profits for ages. %age
For too long the brewery have assumed that they can just push prices up and although accepting maybe an initial drop in sales, demand always returned to its previous state. This is true with other commodities such as cigarettes and, er houses. Except there comes a stage when too many punters say enough is enough and step out of the consumer cycle. One of the few pubs in Douglas that has not seen a significant downturn in trade over the past 2-3 years is The Rovers Return. Check their prices out - they are well below the brewery's. (and the beer is better but maybe that is subjective) For the last 5-10 years the Brewery have got away with charging the most expensive beer anywhere in the British Isle whereas prior to that the beer on the Isle of Man was always significantly lower. Tweek
Good news if it is a permanent move, and not some 'new years day special'. They needed to do something as radical as this IMO, as for years their business model of raising prices - to the extent they have taken it - was fundamentally flawed. Another woollies waiting to happen. I wonder if it is an indication of a possible takeover on the cards? 'Under new ownership/management' is a sign many a Manx drinker has been praying for - for years. I've seen some downward changes in manx pub numbers, especially over the last ten years, but none so much as in the last year.

alpha-acid
Price of wheat/barley has dropped also No it has not not, for the quality of barley required for malting, it has actually inreased again. For those people talking about wheat, read up on the Manx Beeer Purity Laws, which dont exist in the Uk and can use all sorts of adjuncts and enhancers in their beer. Miserable Git !! I here landlords wages are getting slashed heavily as well. And we are talking as much as half when it comes to the wage packet. If anyone fancies a career change , then I am sure there will be a few pubs requiring landlord/landlady teams in the coming months but don't expect more than 20k for a 7 day a week job !!
