Strand Street - Dead & Dying...

Commercial property in general is well overvalued on the island and has been for some time!

How can an island with 80,000 people sustain rents and values that can be as high as twice the UK price for similar areas?

I worked for a UK company which came here full of optimism when taking over a manx company which had decided it was too expensive to operate here and set up in the UK themselves!

When they found that the cost of land and buildings to relocate from Onchan to elsewhere on the Island was more than twice what it would cost in the NW of England, to sustain that with a tiny population and high costs, and get bugger all help from the planning dept or MHK's, they just made 55 people redundant, cut their losses and left.

That actually caused the then Chief Minister severe public embarrassment at a 'Come to the IoM' event in London when they found just how big a player on the International stage they had snubbed. Also the opportunity that the IoM had lost, since they had really big plans for basing their head office here!!

M&S offer a local 5 year warrantee for the same set for loads less dosh. Why shouldn't I?

Waltons seemed to be the same price as M&S on the specific sets I looked at on Sunday. I've heard a few adverse comments about the M&S warranty. I'd rather but from a local independent store that a UK chain, but unless I can get a simple answer from them soon I'm afraid I'll be going the online route and they'll miss out on a sale of around £2k.

Incidentally, you know how I was asking about 42" Panasonics? My wife's now decided we need at least a 46"

If the price is the same, fair enough, go to Waltons. I did get mine on a heavy discount from M&S. Dunno about the warantee, but it's over and above the standard one, so better than nothing.

Your wife is a rare beast indeed!

You seem to be forgetting about the whole tax thing eh?

Buy a 42" and tell her it's a 46". I'm sure you've fooled her by exaggerating the size of things before! :P

You need to be saving a lot on tax to make up a 2.5m overspend when you can't get enough people through the door to pay the bills?

That's if you can find somewhere to build in the first place, dandara hold the only viable site zoned for such a project!

Waltons? DO NOT start me, I bought a gift for a friend from there at Christmas, I have never ever ever ever been so embarrased in my entire life. I didnt want/expect too much, just something with OK sound to plug an I-pod into, what did I get? A pile of crap, my friend opened the gift, plugged in the pod and 'tin can alley' might have sounded better, oh the shame. That is me and Waltons finished, never, not ever ever ever again.

Why do people want such big TVs?

Because they're buyable.

I love the idea of going to the cinema but being an irritable type, I always come away feeling that an ok/good/great film has been ruined by watching it there (mainly due to inconsiderate folk making noise all the way through a film/kicking your seat etc).

So by having a stonking big telly at home you can enjoy such features a great deal more, and plus they're ace for playing video games on and just watching telly in general.

Of course if you don't see the point then that's fine - many people don't like the idea, but they're available, constantly falling in price, and personally I get a lot of enjoyment from having one.

Don't get me wrong - I don't watch a huge amount of telly, I have lots more interesting and 'involved' stuff I can do instead, but I got mine 2 years ago and I love it every bit as much now - as does the wife.

But it's nothing more than a 'nice to have'. I couldn't give a toss whether the neighbours have a bigger telly or what have you. I've bought it for myself & the mrs to enjoy, not to impress other people. If people buy these things to 'keep up with the Joneses' as it were then that's probably a bit sad.

It bemuses me why some people seem so bemused about others that buy large tellies though. I just don't see what's strange about it.

'I'm sure it's a scene familiar to many town centres around Britain at the moment.' - and where the per capita income of the locals is way below that of the Island's population. It is sad that given the vast of wealth secreted away here so much of it is spent off-Island. OK, I know the weather is better, but walk down the main street in Jersey and the shops there reflect the indigenous dosh and it shows in the quality of the outlets. Money can be prised out of packets for quality produce at the right price and that calls for enterprise, a commodity sadly lacking amongst Manx retailers.

I've never understood why that is too. I'm quite happy - I get the same effect for a fraction of the price with my nose pressed against my 14" portable in the bedroom, and by just moving my armchair closer to the telly in the lounge.

A counter to that would be that enterprise in Manx retailers is quickly ground out of them in the face of the locals resistance to it. of course that would just be me piling a large amount of horse shit onto your bullshit.

In my time as a local retailer i have met many enterprising retailers, some with fingers in many pies, others with great ideas and all working hard to make their dream a success.

That my friend explains why they say "It'll make you go blind!"

Watch your porn on a bigger tv and you'll not have to press your nose up against the screen.
