Amadeus Posted January 17, 2009 Share Posted January 17, 2009 Summer 1971 - Turkish-born Mahmut Aygün tries out something new in his little takeaway shop near the Zoo in Berlin. He takes Doner meat, salad & sauce and serves it in a small pide (Turkish pita bread) - the Döner Kebab as we know it today was born. It proved to be an instant hit - first in Germany, then across many parts of Europe, and is still enjoyed by thousands of happy customers every day. Sadly, Mahmut passed away a few days ago, aged 87. His invention, however, will live on and provide work for many, as well as rescue from starvation on the way home from the pub. Mahmut, we owe you one...
