pongo
Will Solar Storms End Our World in 2012? A report from the National Academy of Sciences last week predicted that the next solar maximum, set to occur in 2012, could shut down western civilization for up to 6 months. This is a very dire outlook from a well respected organization. ... In 1859 maximum solar storms caused telegraph wires to short out in the U.S. and Europe, causing fires. Our reliance on electronics could lead to a catastrophic scenario. With our unstable civil and political situations, such a scenario could lead to a complete disruption of economic and social structure. A representative of the National Academy of Sciences spoke on the radio about a possible 30 degree shift in the polar axis. He referenced the year 705 BC, when 15 civilizations from the Middle East to China talked of a day when the sun went backward in the sky, due to a gravity force influencing the earth's rotation. This event caused changes in our calendar, taking the earth from a 360 day orbit around the sun to 365. NASA This week researchers announced that a storm is coming--the most intense solar maximum in fifty years. The prediction comes from a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). "The next sunspot cycle will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one," she says. If correct, the years ahead could produce a burst of solar activity second only to the historic Solar Max of 1958. .. people knew something big was happening when Northern Lights were sighted three times in Mexico. A similar maximum now would be noticed by its effect on cell phones, GPS, weather satellites and many other modern technologies. Conspiracists, religious loonies believers, futurologists and survivalists are also all over this story already.

bluemonday
From wiki ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockroach ) Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects on the planet, some species capable of remaining active for a month without food, or being able to survive on limited resources like the glue from the back of postage stamps. Some can go without air for 45 minutes or slow down their heart rate. In one experiment, cockroaches were able to recover from being submerged underwater for half an hour . It is popularly suggested that cockroaches will "inherit the earth" if humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war. Cockroaches do indeed have a much higher radiation resistance than vertebrates, with the lethal dose perhaps 6 to 15 times that for humans. The cockroach's ability to withstand radiation better than human beings can be explained in terms of the cell cycle. Cells are most vulnerable to the effects of radiation when they are dividing. A cockroach's cells divide only once each time it molts, which is weekly at most in a juvenile roach. Since not all cockroaches would be molting at the same time, many would be unaffected by an acute burst of radiation, but lingering radioactive fallout would still be harmful. I for one will fully welcome our new Cockroach Overlords.
