Sex abuse suits drive US Jesuits to file bankruptcy

The Jesuits in a five-state province of the northwest have filed for bankruptcy reorganization, citing civil lawsuits stemming from allegations of clergy sex abuse, The Oregonian of Portland reports.

In its Chapter 11 filing, the Roman Catholic order formally known as the Society of Jesus, Oregon Province, declared liabilities of $62 million and assets of $4.8 million, the newspaper writes.

The province, based on Portland, is listed as a defendant in nine active lawsuits in Alaska, Idaho and Washington brought by plaintiffs alleging sexual abuse by priests, The Oregonian says.

According to the organization, the Jesuits have settled at least 200 legal claims since 2001, paying more than $25 million, not including payments by insurers, the paper says.

With that many lawsuits, surely that's not a religious group, that's organised sex crime

Unfortunately those terms are frequently interchangeable.
