Losing Your Job And Irish Jokes

the points i made here about shortening of other nations names being quite acceptable .. and some not ..double standards. by those that percieve the wording as racist..

and they are not different things at all .. its all inter-linked.

thats my view on racism in humour .. in rome do as the romans do so the N and P word are a no no for nations like us but not to your working class aussie who use the word frequently the N means any black person including their own ethnic minority. .. wiki it if you dont believe me i already know from our place .. but i wikied it aswell..

doesnt make it right it just keeps the peace .. but having a blackman or any other nationality in a joke isnt racist unless it told in a racist/shocking fashion..

word changes from man to bastard etc..

and so if i see the word paki in a clean joke i dont percieve it as racist same as a an irish joke about paddy as i look at convos everyday where the term is used when australia and pakistan play either each other or anyone else .. if you doubt my word just go to the cricket forum and look. ..

Well I think using nigger to refer to Nigerians is 'risky'. The unacceptability of this term in the western world is very marked. If Australians wish to refer to Nigerians as nigger then this could only have any veneer of some acceptability if Nigerians also refers to themselves as this. I don't think they do.

??? Absolutely not! This is the point. What you are demonstrating is in fact your very own response to being told how to behave and what not to say BUT also your own view that racism is absolutely acceptable if other people around you think it is acceptable.

Using nigger to refer to black people is racist, right. Now it doesn't matter whether other people around you think it is fine to say it or not, it all depends on whether you think that racism is acceptable. Not sure about Paki though as this depends on whether it really is only to refer to Pakistani people and whether they find it acceptable. It isn't for the white Australians to comment on that.

Simply referring to a blackman in a joke may not be inherently racist in itself, even so, before hearing the whole of a joke I can assume the joke is predicated on racist stereotypes or understandings because it is joke about something to do with black people as opposed to white or is there is a comparison based on race, i.e. it is racist.

The Irish jokes in the BT office were not that racist, but the problem with Irish jokes is that the English have a bad history of oppressing the Irish by seeing them as inferior, stupid, and backward and that legacy still exists in the jokes that exist today. If the joke was about Scottishman it would not even be funny, because there is not this implicit understanding, as fallacious as it is, that there is something funny or stupid about the Scottish.

you must lead a dull life.

i like the shock value in lots of jokes ldv .. if its funny i laff .. sorry in advance..

You are making the wrong assumptions. This isn't about how funny jokes are. I know quite a number of racist jokes that I personally find very funny. Even the odd Bernard Manning jokes I have found hilarious. This is because they are based upon stereotypes that people find funny and which are clearly untrue, but also because, as you say, they are jokes that say things that are very funny when told.

It is a completely different matter as to whether these jokes SHOULD be told and why it is necessary to continue making them given the impact they have. The issue is about acceptability not how funny the joke is.

Derogatory to a very small number of women, quite right. Not always though. Some woman see themselves as fag hags.

Simply saying 'fag hag' isn't going to seriously offend anyone as any woman who spends so much time with gay people exclusively and can recognise that is probably so immersed in gay culture that they would be self-confessed fag hags.

But if you turned around to a woman and said to her face that she was a fag hag it is not a friendly word to use. It is a piss-taking term.

The matter of fag hag doesn't fit in with what we have been talking about, it isn't about the continual oppression of a group of people.

119 words when 10 would have done your more potent than valium.

and its equally split 50/50 according to wiki on who would and who would not take offense at being called a fag hag..

and please let the faghag thing go now as it was just an example .
