Lee54
Most of the tradesmen signed on dont appear on the unemployment figues as most have been self employed You are officially mental. If you sign on, you appear on the unemployment figures. The issue is if self employed don't sign on, just because work has dried up. But, they should do. A person that has been self employed cant claim unemployment benifit but can recieve credits for NI and is not registered as unemployed untill a period of no work has been reached, then that person has to de register as a self employed person. One of them was for 50 grand - aren't they the lot that run the airport desks and do the bags? First an airline, now an airline helper..... Moghrey Mie
Most of the tradesmen signed on dont appear on the unemployment figues as most have been self employed You are officially mental. If you sign on, you appear on the unemployment figures. The issue is if self employed don't sign on, just because work has dried up. But, they should do. And lots of women would like to work part-time but can't because of the abysmal government nursery provision on the island. So those women don't appear in the unemployment figures either. In the UK every 3 and 4 year old is entitled to twelve and a half hours Free early learning. in 2010 it will be 15 hours per week. IOM government is trying to increase the number of children in a class so they can take in a few more children. Nursery care should be free and available to every child wherever they live on the island.
Pragmatopian
Nursery care should be free and available to every child wherever they live on the island. Do you mean that nurseries should be set up by government edict and fully subsidised in locations where there is at least one family who have expressed an interest in nursery care for some or all of the working week? It seems a rather poor use of resources. I accept that having a caregiver stay at home with the kids until they reach school age is either undesirable or unaffordable for some, but when you decide to have a child you have to consider that they're not free. One of the costs you need to consider if you plan to continue working is how you're going to deal with childcare: they are (and should be) primarily your responsibility and not the state's.
