Does Big Brother Beckon? - Pag Monday 2 March

Well someone in the Isle of Man establishment is awake to the issues of surveillance etc:

Does Big Brother beckon? Monday 2 March

Is there a state-abase creeping through the Isle of Man thanks to our neighbours in the UK? That’s the question posed by the Positive Action Group at a public meeting next week. Marking the 60th anniversary of George Orwell’s 1984 – and in the midst of worries about privacy – the Island’s Data Protection Supervisor Iain McDonald will give a talk entitled ‘Does Big Brother Beckon?’

PAG meeting on surveillance and civil liberties

PAG are concerned about the gradual erosion of personal liberty with the adoption, by our own government, of UK measures that may be inappropriate for us here.

Regrets I can't make Monday night for the talk. Is anyone going who might comment on Manxforums?

I'd like to see something different on Big Brother this year. They seem to pick celeb hopefulls and not real people like me and you Cronky! Davina Mccall is getting a little tired to - perhaps we need a new host.

What do you think Cronky? Should Dermot come back for BBLB?

Unfortunately the auditions are over for us, so we might not make it this year:

EDINBURGH - Saturday 3 January 2009 - Edinburgh Corn Exchange

CARDIFF - Tuesday 6 January 2009 - Cardiff Millennium Stadium

BIRMINGHAM - Saturday 10 January 2009 - Think Tank, Birmingham

DUBLIN - Tuesday 13 January 2009 - RDS, Dublin

NEWCASTLE - Saturday 17 January 2009 - Newcastle United FC

LONDON - Saturday 31 January 2009 - Sunday 1 February 2009 - Excel Centre, London

MANCHESTER - Saturday 7th February 2009 - New Century House

Who is PAG? Is she like Makosi from Big Brother 6?

I thought this was interesting and an article you might like:

Channel 4: We look forward to Big Brother 10

Channel 4 has hit back against reports of falling viewing figures for reality show Big Brother.

The station said in a statement that the finale of Big Brother 9 peaked at an audience of 5.3 million viewers last night.

However, at its peak the programme could draw an audience of nine million and commentators have noted Big Brother's falling popularity.

The figures showed this year was the most unpopular ever.

Simon Jones, of Hackford Jones, who represents Brian Dowling, the winner of the show's second series, told The Times: "I don't think that the new Big Brother housemates will find anywhere near as much fame and fortune as previous contestants."

The channel was eager to scotch any rumours that this year would be the last for the show.

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: "This year's Big Brother has regularly delivered an audience of around three million viewers - even after nine years on air, it is still right up there among our highest ratings programmes.

"No other programme delivers us such a consistent, sizable audience and we are incredibly pleased with its performance. We look forward to celebrating ten years of Big Brother next year."

Talking about surveillance it wasn't until series 7 that they changed the aspect ratio of broadcast from 4:3 to 16:9!! Can you believe that?!! Look:

Series 1 to 6 of Big Brother (2000–2005), including the four corresponding series of Celebrity Big Brother, were some of the very few programmes on mainstream British terrestrial television that were broadcast in the old 4:3 aspect ratio as opposed to the more common 16:9 widescreen format. (Except the Big Brother Panto, which was in widescreen). The reason for this is unclear, perhaps because shots cannot be artificially staged to use a 16:9 format, the 16:9 format is more efficient as it can cover a wider range of shots, as opposed to the somewhat limited 4:3 full-screen format. However, from series 7 (2006) the aspect ratio has been switched in favour of the 16:9 format, with Big Brother, and all of its sister shows broadcasting in widescreen.

Hopefully they'll have more cameras this year.

Roll on the summer eh?

:) :) :)
