200+ New Jobs As Tesco Expands

Seems the Tchibo brand is withdrawing from IOM and UK. Not a moment too soon.

Agree that Tesco could become too big and powerful here at the expense of other shops. Competition is a healthy thing but when you have the huge buying and discounting power of Tesco it becomes unfair.

Anyways I always shop local - Co-Op or Shoprite down South - so makes sod all difference to me.

Agreed. Not really new jobs are they? Just transfers from the local businesses that will be destroyed by this expansion.

Perceptive. IF Tesco really create 250 ADDITIONAL jobs on the Island it will be great. What usually happens though is that the position with shops closing due to Tesco's arrival/expansion is a LOSS of jobs when you net everything off.

The other thing that seems to happen is that Tesco jobs tend to be low level unskilled, stores, stackers, check-out, auto-check out controllers, cleaners. At least in traditional shops people have to know something about what they are selling and posess a level of customer service skill (I know...I know...customer service does not exist on the Island).

AT will need to get his "work permit" patrol out when they start recruiting!

Could be interesting at planning. Dandara were granted at planning that boats in the Boat park could not exceed 2mt in hight and must remove all masts, now Tesco want to raise the hight of its building, I for one will be objecting and have he right to.

All jobs are good. A job stacking shelves is no worse than a job processing forms, or repetitively typing stuff into a computer IMO.

Selling electrical goods they will basically be in competition with the internet. As are all electrical shops. Maybe only massive stores and very expensive specialist boutiques can inevitably compete in that market.

As for competition - Shoprite has every opportunity to win back customers in many ways which have nothing to do with price. We definitely need competition but it would be crazy to blame Tesco for getting so much right rather than wondering what the competition has got wrong. It really isn't only about price.

How long before they sell out to one of Tescos rivals?

Is the brand worth anything? Obviously the sites have value.

Bit late my son it has gone past planning stage and been approved, you should have objected when it was advertised

So what are your grounds for objection Lee54?

For starters, it's a crap idea to channel even more traffic down there - hopeless as it is. Then I could object as it's spoiling my views :)

Planning accepted that to have boats over 2nts high or to allow boats with raised masts in the Boat park (paid for by tax payers) would spoil the view from the new appartments that are to be built.

The boat park would have spoiled the views out to sea. What will a rise of the tesco roof spoil the view of? The bus station?

I'm sure our local supermarket will be on the ball and looking at ways to maximise in the short term and minimise the impact of these works in the longer term

If I worked for Shorpite, I'd be looking at all the work and disruption involved on site to get Tesco to where they want to be, and seeing a great opportunity.

Tesco is a foul place to shop at the best of times. I know they will have hundreds of staff country wide who will specialise in shop refits and extensions, but even with that being the case, there is no way there won't be major disruption down there while the work goes on. Getting construction traffic on and off site, reduced car parking in the short term, noise, dust, possible power supply disruptions etc etc.

Shoprite could, and should, make sure that anyone who gives them another chance during these works in order to avoid the hassle on Lake Road gets and experience that convinces them to keep coming back.

They won't though. And once the work is complete and we have our shiny new "superstore" they will just be one of a number of local businesses that will suffer.

That's progress I suppose

Hardly a binding precenent given that the Tesco building is already over 2 metres high

So a two level car park and a mezzanine. Are they going to raise the rooh height or just construct the mezzanine, like they did in B&Q , within the existing roofline

WE should be grateful to Teso's for employing persons who in years gone by would have been on benfits etc

Those in the competition who do not survive will hopefully be fit and bright enough to offer specilaist services or retrain
