Manxman2000
CONDOR has hit back at a Jersey politician’s accusations that its fares had doubled during the last year, saying his claims were inaccurate and misleading. Deputy Sean Power made the claim during an interview with Channel Television and said he planned to make a formal complaint to the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority. But in a recent interview with the Guernsey Press, the new managing director of Condor assured customers that prices had not risen. At the time, Simon Edsall (pictured) said: ‘The economics of ferry operations are that it’s a fixed cost base. What that means is that our costs are the same per trip no matter how many passengers we have. For the great majority of our sailings, we are not completely full. So what we are trying to achieve is maximising the number of people we take on our service each time - and you cannot do that by charging astronomical prices. ‘Our prices this year are no higher than they were last year.’ A Condor spokesman added yesterday: ‘Condor has a long-term commitment to providing a world-class service to the islands. ‘We are disappointed that recent criticisms relating to Condor’s fares and pricing structure are inaccurate and misleading.’ I seem to have heard this before

Manxman2000
Among the operators being investigated in the study announced last week is Wightlink which is owned by Macquarie, the Australian investment bank that also owns the Steam Packet. Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner, whose campaign has been supported by more than 8,000 individuals and organisations, said that the decision to launch a market study into Isle of Wight ferry services was 'absolutely the right decision for the Island'. He said: 'I am particularly concerned that, as the ferry companies have changed hands for ever-increasing sums of money, the levels of debt have grown very substantially. The money to repay that debt can come only from ferry users, most particularly Islanders, who rely on it all year round. 'If there is evidence from the experience of the Isle of Man that would help the OFT decide that a full investigation is appropriate I would be very glad to hear of it.' Manx OFT chairman Bill Henderson said he had already asked his officers to contact the UK OFT with regard to the Steam Packet investigation and they may contact the Isle of Wight MP as well. He said: 'We are keen to talk to them and it's obviously good news that they are willing to talk to us.'
