bluemonday
3 young lives lost in the past week. 100 plus jobs lost this morning. *Silence* Um er Umm I know lets crow about a high-profile media campaign for tourism. Figures for cost to income generated will be made available will they?
Albert Tatlock
Yeah right - dream on - which nutjob is going to pay through the nose to travel and stay here, when he can hop on a train or a plane at the very same place and head off to the continent or numerous other destinations - for better than half the price? They'd be better off giving the London advertisement budget away to a thousand pensioners in Southport and elsewhere in the North West - towards cheap tickets to get here. At least they know the place, would come over, and spend when here.
pongo
Done right the IOM could be an excellent weekend away from the city break. You fly out on a friday night. You are taken direct to your destination (completely avoiding Douglas etc) which is a very nice lodge style boutique hotel with excellent rooms slick service, fantastic food and utter quiet + spa, pool etc. There is wet weather gear and transport provided for fresh air, walks etc. You completely unwind. Mountains, coast, treking, mist, drizzle etc. The weather would not be an issue. And it would be charged at a premium. Ireland does well with similar. Frances
I suspect they will just join the OAP coach parties in Port Erin - is the chippy there still open or has that shut too ?
Albert Tatlock
We have had some 'nutjobs' from Larndon staying with us. People who have relatives and friends here come here anyway - advertising or no advertising usually.
Cronky
Yeah right - dream on - which nutjob is going to pay through the nose to travel and stay here, when he can hop on a train or a plane at the very same place and head off to the continent or numerous other destinations - for better than half the price? We have had some 'nutjobs' from Larndon staying with us. They adored it and came back for seconds. It's a very easy place to get to from Central London if you use City airport. You can get away from the Ukay completely and really unwind. A couple of really nice spar hotels would go down a treat. How about re-furbishing the Grand Island? Cronky
People who have relatives and friends here come here anyway - advertising or no advertising usually. Actually the majority of folk who have visited us have stayed in holiday cottages. I think advertising in Larndon is commercially viable. Of course if lots of Larndoners get the idea they want to move over that's another issue!
pongo
Actually the majority of folk who have visited us have stayed in holiday cottages. What do they get up to over here? Do you get a sense of what they like best about the island or perhaps what they think could be improved ? Do you suggest walks for them etc? Cronky
What do they get up to over here? Do you get a sense of what they like best about the island or perhaps what they think could be improved ? Do you suggest walks for them etc? One couple had only recently been attracted so I didn't like to ask! More seriously they loved the scenery, the lack of people & traffic, the fresh air, the beaches, the friendly people, quirky different things and the general 'laid backness' of it all. One couple came close to moving over but the wife wasn't too keen. Some relatives came here three years running. However, they stopped because more relatives kept tagging on . . . Also, there's loads to do for young children. Most towns or villages have a good, safe play area and plenty of space to run around. One family simply spent two weeks playing on a beach with no one else on it. Everyone likes the House of Mannanan and Castle Rushen. Nobody has had a bad word for the place to be honest. A few more smartish hotels offering a boutique style service would go down a treat. Cornwall is very popular for people getting away from the south east but it's a long car journey and quite pricey. One thing that does stand out to visitors is being able to have friendly conversations with strangers as that is a social taboo these days in most big cities. Of course, the big bug bear is getting to the island. However, City airport has a huge catchment area - if only people new to come here. Of course, if you are oop north it's a different story because of that ruddy Steam Racket . . .
Amadeus
Aha - that would explain the posters all over the place. There you try to escape for a few days, and then... City airport Victoria station Also seen a few ads in the free papers they ram down your throat on every corner in the evening, although not very well done ones. Meant to keep one but didn't - basically, the ad was in nice big letters, and said "visit our website" - only that the website address was printed in tiny little font and hardly readable at the bottom...
