[BBC News] Island targeting London tourists

Very 'designer' ads.

But what they really need is a big map of the Irish Sea and an arrow pointing 'The IOM is here!'

You're hired!

I'd hazard a guess that most IOM residents would be hard pushed to point out most Spanish, North African, Turkish resorts on a map, yet they still go. They don't give a shit about the geography yet it offers them what they want - sun and cheap ale.

Maybe, but they certainly wouldn't know where the:

Isle of Don Juan or Isle of Mustapha (see our website for Cabrera, Sesklio etc.) was - would they?

Your examples are where people have been going for the last 50 years on holiday...and the major reasons (sun, cheap ale and cheap travel) why a generation hasn't bothered coming to this island.

It is not worth trying to appeal to the sort of people who want sun and cheap ale. It is not worth trying to appeal on price. It is not worth trying to appeal to a mass market or to people on a limited budget.

But there are plenty of people with money who would welcome peace and quiet + fresh air in a quality environment with good food. Even in winter. A roaring log fire would probably add to the ambiance. It all needs to be understated, absolutely perfect and utterly modern. It should be as easy as possible to book. Everyone employed in the chain should be used to working to the highest standards.

After this recession lifts there will be a whole new generation of people on very high salaries but with no interest in cheap beer, tourist railways or water wheels. And they would not come here for the weather any more than they would go to the west of Ireland for the weather.

I can't see what the problem with those billboard advertsare. Anyone seeing the pictures will stop and ask where the place is if they are interested. It quite clearly says Isle of Man. People waiting for a train have time to stop and read something that looks a bit different.

We had friends from oop north staying. They like the Isle of Man but no more so than, say, the Lake District which is two hours away by car. For Larndoners it's very accessible and you don't have to go on one of those stinky Steam Packet boats.

I would hope that this campaign stimulates a new kind of hotel trade and that the trend of closing down run down hotels gets reversed into developing something a bit more special. Even in a recession there is a niche market for luxury accommodation. The Isle of Man's just as good for that as anywhere else. Probably a lot better in my opinion.
