Manx Radio's Mrplus Tt!

Manx Radio have launched their MR+ TT website service.

So how does this work then?

Publicly funded radio station uses funds to cover the TT over the years.

Publicly funded radio station creates website to "sell" on a commercial basis, access to the archives of this material.

Publicly funded radio station uses funds to produce this morning's Mandate news and current affairs programme that features Manx Radio staff (John Marsom) to freely advertise the new "subscription website" (John's words not mine).

Let's hope the TT service works - at the moment MR's internet provider has problems - no Alex, no Chris, No Stu :(

But I'll be back on the Rock on Thursday :)

It's our fault. We have to decide if we want no public broadcaster here, and cut them off completely, which I think would be a loss. Or we have to pay more to keep them free off the commercial pressures that lead to them doing this stuff, which will lead to more 'publicly funded' bleats from people like you.

They can't win currently.

Fair point.

Although the only ones that are certainly winning are all those Manx Radio staff. :)

Seems pretty reasonable to me. Those on the Island can still get access to the radio broadcast for free, but they are commercialised for consumption by global markets, footing part of the bill that taxpayers would otherwise have to pay through a larger subsidy to Manx Radio.

It's no different to the BBC selling its content overseas through BBC Worldwide. That revenue gets put back into programme-making, which benefits the license payers.

Hmmm... is it a coincidence that in your entire membership of this site you've started three topics, all about Manx Radio? Any history / sour grapes / previous forum names we should know about?

It should be free all around the world IMO. We have a readily available group wanting to listen and who get excited about the TT - and if they get enthused enough, are the most likely to follow it up with an actual visit next time - to see it for real and spend real money here.

Let's stick to the knitting - free access to this is a much better tourism advertising campaign - for something good we really offer - far better than paying to stick bloomin bill boards up about 'Keith' in London trying to attract people who will never pay silly prices to come here when they can go and stay all over Europe for half the price.

BBC Worldwide is a stand-alone self-financing organisation.

The BBC do not give away free advertising for it on air.

The MRPlusTT thing is to "raise revenues for the TT" (according to John Marsom on Mandate this morning), no reference to the money going back into programming.

What a strange thing to say... but I'll answer as best I can.

I've started three topics about MR - so what. It's forum, for opinions, isn't it. There are other people on the island that have started topics about MR, and have done so for years.

History/sour grapes - not that I can think of, I've not worked there - I am merely a taxpayer questioning the funding, as others have done before me and will do in the future. I think questions were asked in the Keys last year about the charge of the Radio TT online feed.

Previous forum names - don't see what you're getting at there. I use this as a name, and it is of course suitably anonymous, like most others on the forums.

I think we're probably missing the point here.

The Government needs to raise money from TT activities wherever possible. One of the areas it can use effectively is the web. The only things it has to sell (ie which have a commercial value) are race timing and live commentary.

Not so much MR profiteering, then, as Government leveraging the potential of all its revenue streams. Or whatever the proper phrase might be.

What I said was the ONLY three topics you've ever started are about Manx Radio. Strange coincidence. And thanks to the post search facility, it's fairly easy to see the vast majority of your posts are having a pop at one particular radio station. In fact, you started almost exactly the same thread at about this time last year. Which makes me wonder whether there's a particular reason you're so fixated... other, of course, than being "merely a taxpayer".

This time last year would have been the one about MR+, so that would be right. I'm having a pop yes, it's just the thing that gets my goat so to speak - some people moan all the time about Steam Packet, I moan about Manx Radio. That said though, even I hadn't realised that they were the only threads I've started, though I have contributed to others conversations.

Baby Jeebus is crying because you're being mean again. And fluffy kittens are dying in your sea of nastiness. Not that I care - I'm one of 'all those staff' who spend our days swilling champagne and troughing truffles on your 20p a week contribution.

No wait - we all go up the hill, work hard and then come back down the hill when we're knackered. Yep, a national PSB radio station full of people doing their best would certainly piss me off too.

Hold on there Mr peters, I wasn't saying you weren't doing your best.

There are an awful lot of you though.

You may note that quite often I will defend Manx Radio when it comes in for any stick on here.

As a taxpayer though, I see Manx Radio as quickly becoming an extension of the legions of highly paid and pensioned Government workers on the Island.
