Board Of Education Rip?

I hadn't heard about this before:

Minister pays tribute to work of Board of Education

The elected Board of Education has been scrapped. So, the Department of Education are holding a piss up to celebrate just what a good system it was:

‘Members of the Board of Education have been the eyes and ears of the Education Service in the Isle of Man for many years. They have played a major role in the running of our schools and the Isle of Man College through their presence on the governing bodies, making staff appointments and dealing with disciplinary matters and student awards. Each has brought their individual style and character to their role and they have supported and challenged their schools through critical friendship,’

So, since it was all so jolly good they are replacing the elected board with an appointed board because apparently:

. . . the Department would be greatly burdened if we did not have the assistance of our Board members, soon to be replaced by the position of membership of the Education Council, to reliably carry out the role.

Why is appointing people a better system than electing them? Surely appointees are just more likely to go along with the policies and are less likely to challenge things and represent the views of the public?

Anyone care to explain?

I think you've answered your own question there with

appointees are just more likely to go along with the policies and are less likely to challenge things and represent the views of the public?

Yes. The electorate don't give a shit, and didn't show up for the elections, single figures in some cases. On some occasions there were no candidates put forward to vote for either. So, with the full agreement of the board, it's been changed to the appointment system to avoid having to hold elections where nobody turns up to vote and there's nobody to vote for.

It's the electorates fault, nothing sinister and a sensible solution.

Hi, thanks for those comments. I suspected that might be part of the problem. Political apathy. It's a curse. My concern would be that appointed Education Council members lack the independece to hold the Department of Education to account if that's what they need to do. It will be interesting to see how they go about appointing people!
