Miserable Shop Assistants

The winner of the miserable shop assistant award goes to a certain newsagent in Castletown, he is without doubt head and shoulders above all previous entrants. Anyone living in Castletown knows who i am talking about.

I was once banned from his shop, but i do like annoying him.

What did you do to get yourself banned from a newsagent's?

Various things, snap his Kit Kats and then complain they were broken when i went to pay, tell him he had the best collection porn in Castletown. But the best one was to be nice and pleasant, he hates that.

Hahaha I know exactly who you're talking about! Miserable as sin, he is. The last person who should be 'serving' the public.

That reminds me of a bloke across . Theres a 20ft shipping container that has been converted into a small shop down at Bootle docks . The guy who works in there has got to be the most miserable fucker on this planet . The fact that he was making a small fortune due to a captive audience seemed to bypass him completely as he begrudgedly threw your change onto the counter . Service with a sneer .

Why bother with the local shops, when you can shop online for half the price without the hassle?

I would shop local if I could afford to.

I'm new to the Island and have found customer service in shops to be very good. That said, I'm chatty and friendly with everyone and seem to get the same attitude back from people. Having worked in shops and owned one myself I feel for shop assistants as there are members of the public who speak to you like you're the lowest of the low. It's incredibly hard to stay upbeat if half the people who have come through the door that morning have been twunty, abrupt, bad mannered and treated you like a glorified, automated cash register.

And it would be worthwhile remembering that the customer is always right

But they are not. This is just a statement aimed at maintaining profit through customer loyalty. Sometimes customers can be exceptionally rude and treat the staff like shit. Most employers would rather allow this than have the staff member tell the customer to 'bugger off' or respond in a more fitting way. But it is absolutely unacceptable for staff to receive disrespect.

Well said Cherrypies, LDV and Declan on another post.

If there's anyone in the world who has proven that they're not grumpy, then please make yourself known now....... No, I didn't think so.

So what causes people to be grumpy in the first place? Have they been bullied, had a recent upset, family problems, overworked, lack of sleep, headache, people driving irresponsibly and caused you to break hard.. etc, etc..? There's loads of reasons as to why people get grumpy and especially IMO during this hectic busy time during Practise and TT week.

I'm sure that peoples jobs in many services on the island have had to step up a gear to cope with the temporary excess population from our visiting neighbours across many waters and who've probably have had the misfortune to serve or speak to a disrespectful customer during their daily tasks.

Mr Punisher, I agree that the person involved should have taken you to the respective article and that's why certain firms employ Mystery Shoppers to check on the levels of service, goods, equipment and how they responded to their refund policy. (I know, I used to do it).

I don't agree however, that this should have been brought up in a forum naming an exact store, as this could result in loads of bogus name callings of any shop or service, which anyone with a grudge could willfully or maliciously do without proof of the shops doing it.

Half the price without the hassle ? So you must be one of the lucky ones that has never had the wrong product sent , had to wait about 1 week for a return to be arranged , only for the wrong product to be sent again. Then what happens when it breaks.Another couple of weeks to send it back again , gets returned still faulty.Indeed how about 1-2 hour phone calls to a call centre trying to explain to the non english speaking operative what the problem with your purchase is.Half price as well ?

No hassle indeed.

Have you been served today by a miserable, useless or rude shop assistant?

I was warned about a certain Fireplace supply shop not a million miles from the Broadway traffic lights. People said it wasn't a nice place to go and the guy was a misery. I went there anyway and, sure enough, found the guy to be very grumpy and unhelpful. Bad feeling as soon as you walk in - and left standing there for ages. Went and spend loadsamoney at the fireplace shop at Laxey instead! (Makes you wonder how these people stay in business.)

years since ive been in that shop .. he was a misirable twat then aswell .. and made to wait for srvice in an empty shop .. how he stays in business is a mystery.

Always two sides, i went in, younger bloke serving, couldnt be more helpful. TBH didnt buy as was a bit out of our budget not saying it was expensive but i was a bit ignorant as to the cost of these things, would recommend. Even let junior use the latrine !

Has me.

And me

All I'm trying to illustrate is that bad service happens in traditional bricks & mortar retail but it does also happen from websites as well.

I'll give you a for instance as well , Dell. The worst customer service I have ever had.Yes they sell cheap pc's but now I would rather pay a little bit more locally for a decent quality pc knowing that if it breaks I can speak to them direct over the phone or just pop in and see them.

When I tried to raise an issue with Dell about the problem we had with our pc , the phone call took about 2 hours and the man at the other end could barely speak English.I got so frustrated , I hung up , bought a new graphics card from the shop down the road and have never been back to Dell since.

I have to say I experienced the same. I bought a Dell laptop about 18 months ago and it had a fault. Same experience as you. Got stuck talking to some Indian bloke who plainly could not speak English but who had clearly been told by Dell to pretend that he was English - yes of course you're called "Martin" despite the fact you speak like Apu off the Simpsons.

Internet companies totally stink and just because they are cheap does not mean that they should expect your trade.

Maybe your right I shouldn't have mentioned the stores name but if you look through the forums there are plenty of stores, services, people mentioned all of the time so I am not the first.

I just expect that the store I am shopping in and handing over my hard earned cash to should have staff that are able to do the basics and look after the customers interests.

So you think its ok to be rude to the public just so long as you have an excuse? Time of the month,overworked/underpaid,broken nail, lack of sleep, blah etc,(welcome to the real world) i have worked serving the public myself and i loved it which obviously reflected in my rapport with people, personally i couldnt imagine being rude to someone unless they were rude to me.I also worked with a girl a few years ago who was so rude in her mannerisms she made all the staff miserable, the annoying thing was because she was so horrible and rude nobody would leave tips for her but the rest of us always had to share the tips that we worked so hard for with her,yes some people do genuinely and obviously do have problems but some people are genuinely just rude and miserable (and are not people persons) so clearly they shouldnt work with the public, after all you wouldnt work with children if you didnt like them would you!
