manxman2
it is an offence to recklessly disturb a basking shark Does that mean that if you disturb them carefully you're ok? I don't think people diving with them are much of an issue, but boats getting too close is bound to piss the poor critters off. I'm not defending them, but I'd be surprised if a jetski could cause much more than a nasty shiner to a basking shark since the propeller (impeller) is not at all exposed, plus there's not a lot of depth of a jetski in the water. Boats on the other hand sit much deeper in general, may not have the same visibility as a jetskier, and have an exposed prop that goes way deeper in the water and can cause a fair bit of damage if they strike something. no i dont suppose a half ton of 750cc jetski travelling at 30/40 mile an hour would cause more than a minor bump cret .. do you people write this shite in a trance or something.. Cret
no i dont suppose a half ton of 750cc jetski travelling at 30/40 mile an hour would cause more than a minor bump cret .. do you people write this shite in a trance or something.. Are you this obtuse on purpose or is it a natural skill? I was basically describing the fact that a jetski is way less damaging & less likely to collide with a shark than a normal boat for numerous reasons. Are any of those points wrong? At any given point there are a hell of a lot more boats than jetskis in the water, capable of the same speeds but with a much greater chance of hitting a shark, much greater chance of serious damage to such an animal, smaller chance of seeing it in the first place, and much smaller chance of avoiding it if it's noticed at the last minute. The shiner comment was not serious in case you're struggling with that one too as you appear to be. If you don't understand that simple concept then just say so, and I'll use a bigger font or something to try and help you understand. Edited to add - I'm not a people, I'm a person. We're not all schizo like you might be.
Gilligan
I'll give anyone found harming jet skiers £5000 Seconded. Aquatic boyracing c*nts of the highest order. Whats wrong with jet skiing? I did once in an old quarry in France, t'was most thrilling. Doing it in the sea would be more fun, as its more open, and you can jump over the waves. As for hitting the sharks, surely you'd see something like a large light patch, or a fin or something, and adjust your course accordingly so as not to hit them? Maybe you've never been jet skiing before, but it is ace.
Gladys
Is English Newsbot's first language? That's right, focus your attention on the important part of the posting. Headlines are kind of important, they make you want to read the piece, or skip it. For the record, I think it is important that we don't interfere with these creatures, just as we should leave any other wild animal alone. However, I am all for interfering with Newsbot, perhaps run him over with a jet ski, just to sharpen up his jounalistic skills.

You'd have a much better chance of success if you did it with a boat.

CJW
Anyone see the feature on BBC Breakfast this morning featuring Basking Sharks off Cornwall? Very interesting ....especially the Eco Tourism part I didn't see it, but let's make one thing clear about Eco-tourism and the Isle of Man - it's a non-starter. There is not a single sp. of mammal, bird or a insect here that cannot be seen more cheaply in the UK and, probably, on a reserve with better facilities and conservation plans in place.
