[BBC News] Axed entertainment hits TT trade

From what I've heard, the beer tent made a loss, once the rent of the Bottleneck car park had been deducted. I wonder how much the Corpy charge for the car park over the 12 days or thereabouts that the tent was up?

I've always thought the tent was a bit unfair on the businesses that have to run in permanent premises all year round.

Yeah, thats a bit sly on them really.

Businesses on the Isle of Man have complained that trade suffered over the TT races because of a "lack of entertainment".

Source : http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/world/...man/8100448.stm

Maybe Douglas corporation should have done what other authorities do, provide events in their area! Why should the taxpayer provide all the entertainment?!

Bushy's could have put up the screens as it seems to benefit them........Again the taxpayer providing for a business?!

When will the Government start subsidising the flights and boats for the benefit of the Steampacket and the airlines.........Certainly not for the taxpayer!

Why should rate payers of Douglas provide entertainment for TT..? I think the races should be about the racing, the entertainment should be left up to private individuals that wish to profit from said people coming to watch the bikes, people do not come to the Island for the entertainment and the bikes just there as an added extra.

Why should the ratepayers of Douglas subsidise the shows that were on in the Villa, AFAIK the Whitesnake concert was the only event where the place was near capacity - would be interesting to hear how much money was lost at the Villa this year!

The bar in the villa was crap.

£3 for a can of Carling or John Smiths, if you couldn't be bothered waiting for a draft pint, which was the same price. Only spirits were in miniatures, and even then they only had a choice of 3.

This is probably the first year where EVERY pint of real beer I had at Bushys was actually nice. It normally gets a bit dodgy towards the end of the week.

Who? like Busheys who got kicked out of their permanent premises across the road for another set of fucking offices?

The problem this year was that they ditched all the previous year's prom entertainment, but kept the H&S Nazis and Rozzers, so unlike 15 years ago when ppl 'could' do a burn out etc on the prom, now they are lashed.

I would like to see a public enquiry, as to be quite honest, I think the IOM Government want the TT gone.

Nothing to do with the TT but we looked into hiring one of the rooms for a kids party a while ago, we were expecting it to be quite pricey but got a bit of a shock when we were told it would be over £800, we would have only been using it for 3 hours. :(

Matty, I'm guessing it's the government who took the hit on the villa shows, not the corpy. The villa isn't the corpies any more is it?

That's between bushies and their landlord. If they wanted a permanent venue on the prom there's been plenty of opportunities since that closed, plenty of bars opened up in the meantime, bordellos, aperitivo, amber, etc. Seems to me they get the opportunity to cherry pick the prom trade by setting up shop there two weeks a year. I'd be pissed off if I was the owner of a bar that ran on the prom all year round.

Not just the government.

The Villa had 4000 tickets for whitesnake of which only 2800 were sold.

Those that could not make the show (marshalls on the mountain etc ) had their tickets exchanged for beer tokens as the Villa never had the cash to give refunds.

I wouldn't hold your breath as far as an enquiry goes.

Anyway, I don't think they want the TT gone, they've already said that they'll reinstate some of the Prom attractions next year, and that mistakes were made.

What we are dealing with here is yet another case of sheer bloody incompetence by our elected representatives.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I seem to remember a huge outcry about the cost/mess/hassle of the Funfair not so long ago. How it was not what the bikers wanted etc.

If Bushy's made a loss they wouldn't be doing it. Martin B is no fool.

Big screen was missed but do you really want to stand in a smelly cold tent watching TV?

It must be noted that while there was less in Douglas this year that coincidentally there appeared to be less accidents this year. Could it be that bikers stayed in the campsites or closer to their digs in different parts of the island and thus weren't riding home later with a few beers on board?

Am I the only one who never really had a problem with the funfair?

Perhaps.

Depends on your age group. If you have very young kids you usually resent the £5 a go for the shitty broken rides, or if you have teenage girls you have the worry of them potentially being touched up by some filthy pikey. If your in neither group you probably don't have a problem with the funfair.

I don't think the DTL helped things by only having the Villa events listed in the "Entertainment" section of the iomtt.com website.

Like Mutley, I vaguely remember quite a few complaints that the TT had become really commercialised, it was the same entertainment every year, the fair wasn't really interesting to the bikers blah blah blee bloo.

Yeah, more can be done, but I really hope they don't just return to the tired old formula of the Purple Helmets, Steve Colley and a big screen outside a beer tent.
