Frances
Rodger Christian has done a vast amount of work in catalogueing most (?all) of the memorials + graves - the Manx Museum has a list - some Memorials are noted on Manxnotebook - the memorials range from the National War Memorial at St Johns through to the framed paper records (eg there was one in a room at Salisbury Rd Methodist Church)
La_Dolce_Vita
Little unsure what is meant by the article. Have the memorials been maintained up until now? Suppose at least something is being done about it now.
Declan
An Earlier Newsbot Piece gives more background LDV. Seem to be making slow progress, though.
Frances
there is no national oversight - eg the Knox memorial in Regent St post office (which should be treated as a national art treasure) was apparently only restored to its site by pressure from some staff - other Knox designed grave memorials (in private hands) have been allowed to decay greatly) - the main parish memorials are probaly safe but for example that outside St Matthews Douglas was badly damaged some years ago by a vandal throwing red paint over it. La_Dolce_Vita
Thanks Declan Knox designed grave memorials (in private hands) have been allowed to decay greatly) - the main parish memorials are probaly safe but for example that outside St Matthews Douglas was badly damaged some years ago by a vandal throwing red paint over it. Don't understand why someone would throw paint over a memorial, that is a very premeditated act. People don't just have paint handy. I'll have to read up on this. Didn't realise Knox designed memorial - but then I haven't read a great deal about the man.
Terse
Perhaps we should set up a Manx version of something like THIS
piebaps
lezayre memorial was also vandalised a couple of years ago. There were a number of fund raisers held to get the money to repair it and an anonymouse donor finally stumped up a chucnk of money at the end. Why on earth you would want to vandalise one of these is a total mystery. Scumbags.
