Cassie
PLEASE sign the number10.gov.uk petition against the massive Air Passenger Duty hikes http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/APDIncrease Air passengers urged to sign APD petition July 9, 2009 Passengers can now show their solidarity with the airline industry by signing a petition against the planned doubling of Air Passenger Duty (APD) from 2010. More than 1,900 signatures have already been gathered for the e-petition, which warns that the regressive tax will drive up airfares and hamper the economic recovery. Click here to sign the number10.gov.uk petition against APD hikes Whitehall is preparing to increase APD by up to 112 per cent in 2010 – raising the cost of a family holiday on long-haul routes by as much as £360. "At a time when the airline industry is suffering this move will penalise holidaymakers ... when disposable income is falling," the petition's creator, Neil McCawley, stated. "APD already raises £2 billion annually, and [it] is obvious to anyone that the government is not using this money to help the environment, but instead sees the airlines in the same way as they see motorists - i.e. another opportunity to tax the British public." The controversial tax has been opposed by almost every firm in the travel industry. Ryanair has called it a "tourist tax" while Virgin Atlantic likens it to the "poll tax of the skies". Nor me as I do not see in general why I have a right to petition another Government on their policies just as I dd not agree with non manx residents trying to influence the Manx govt to change. Sebrof
So, you chaps want to make it more expensive for tourists and business people to come to the island, and for locals to go on holiday? Hmm. S
GD4ELI
So, you chaps want to make it more expensive for tourists and business people to come to the island, and for locals to go on holiday? Hmm. S I think myself and Slim would still like there to be an inhabitable island for people to come to. I don't care about people going on holiday. It's a lot cheaper than it was 10 - 15 years ago, prices need to rise.

jehovah
So, you chaps want to make it more expensive for tourists and business people to come to the island, and for locals to go on holiday? Hmm. S Not at all, it's the UK gov that are suggesting this, not us. Don't see why I should lobby No 10. Business people offset it against tax, so no cost to them. Tourists, are you having a laugh? Lost Login
S It's a lot cheaper than it was 10 - 15 years ago, prices need to rise. I am sure plenty will moan that prices are way to high but last night I was looking at taking a four or five day break some time in September over a weekend. As long as you can be slightly flexible it was easy enough to find return flights to Liverpool for £56, Gatwick 70, Frankfurt £105 and Amsterdam £146. OK that excluded credit card booking cost and luggage which is probably another £20 but for under £100 you can easily fly to the UK and to Europe for under £200 as long as you book in advance. I reckon that is pretty good
Slim
So, you chaps want to make it more expensive for tourists and business people to come to the island, and for locals to go on holiday? Hmm. Yes. I think I was pretty clear? If your suggesting we'd lose out, I disagree. I believe more expensive air travel would encourage nearby people to come here. bluemonday
Talking of visitors, I had to see the doctor yesterday with a heel problem. Whilst I was sat waiting for my name to come up in lights, two separate visitor couples came in to get a docs appointment and I thought to myself that when this health agreement ends, that'll cause fun and games and lots more paperwork.
