I care because I remember the mad cow crisis of the 1990s, when the British government told people all was well, when there was reason to fear it wasn't. That damaged public confidence in advice from all sources, scientists as well as politicans. In the end BSE didn't kill as many people as some people initially feared. Flu is a different beast.
