english zloty
Best news i heard this year, most civil servants are not even worth paying the minimum wage. Time for a good clean out of the slackers who just turn up and get a wage. I think you may have missed the point though? 'yay, great news, civil servants to take paycuts and lose their jobs'...bad news, the reality of the press release... 'the unions aren't going to let this happen'...which is probably going to cost a whole lot more, and on the basis of previous union involvement, result in the highest paid bus drivers in the UK etc
The Voice of Reason
Why do people take delight in what is basically bad news for civil servants (and those who depend on them or benefit from their existence)? You've not really thought it through have you? Redundancies/less jobs in the civil service ("Yay"!) means more people chasing jobs in the private sector. Contrary to what I have read on here I have found most civil servants to be able and competent in their jobs - are they just an easy target?. There are some pretty crap people employed in the private sector too (and no I'm not a civil servant)
Tugger
Nobody should forget this table, showing the number of people earning salaries within certain bands for 2009 and 2008: Remuneration Band 2009/2008 £225,000 - £249,999 1/0 £200,000 - £224,999 3/1 £175,000 - £199,999 13/8 £150,000 - £174,999 12/13 £125,000 - £149,999 21/16 £100,000 - £124,999 34/28 £75,000 - £99,999 87/53 £50,000 - £74,999 591/413 That's a dozen civil servants that the private sector pays £150 grand plus a year. Another 13 earn upwards of £175 grand. The numbers of these parasites need looking at. A third of the workforce being employed by the government is not a great driver of efficiency. Aye but it won't be those high flyers in those pay brackets they'll get rid of. It will most probably be from the 18k to 25k bracket, the lower paid civil servants. I'm sure if such tables were available for those in the private sector they would be much more remarkable. Fred "the Shred" Goodwin anyone? "Parasites?" - easy targets as I say. Yes there are those earning the higher salaries as you may expect in any organisation. As a third of the workforce, is the guy who cleans your street, the nurse who tends your wounds, the teacher who teaches your children all parasites.? It may be more "efficient" for your street to remain uncleaned, your injuries unattended to, or your child not taught. Is that what you want? Are these the figures for all public sector workers, including such parasites as doctors, surgeons, etc? There are just under 2,200 civil servants in the IOM (simple Google search found this stat. Tugger
I'd be pretty surprised if my binman was earning upwards of 50 grand a year. The private sector MAKES money, that's where the money that people in the private sector get paid comes from. The public sector TAKES money. There's quite a difference. Twitch
I get screwed more by the private sector than I ever do by the Govt. Let's take my mortage application for instance....

Tugger
I don't understand how anyone would think that those salaries don't merit some investigation, frankly, unless they were stupid.
Twitch
I'm sure they are investigated and I'm not stupid, thanks. What is the going rate for a Chief Exec in the private sector nowadays? The public sector have to pay the market rate or else you really will get fuckin' monkeys running the show as no 'parasite' will work for considerably less than the going rate. Mr Shoe
i think when people talk about parasitic civil servants they're certainly NOT talking about nurses, teachers and bin men. they're thinking about the admin/business ones who are either off on long term stress leave, busy updating their facebook or putting yet another complaint into HR about vera down the hall. these people earn damn good money for very little effort and should be (as was suggested earlier) melted down. all societies need this "useless" portion of the populace, but the perception is that we have a disproportionately high number - no sh!t

Repeat, compare with private sector, where remunerations, bonuses etc can be measured in £millions. Yes we'd all like to be earning £100k/£150k/£200k plus and yes civil cervants salaries should be subject to scrutiny as CEO's etc of private companies should be subject to shareholder scrutinity. I think really all you are doing is promoting the politics of envy.
